While killing time on Vcoins this morning I came across a hemidrachm of Ptolemy IV

While a nice coin, it does have some adjustment marks on the reverse. Still, I looked the look of the coin. The seller was asking $230, which I thought was high, so i decided to see what previous hemidrachms of Ptolemy IV had sold for on CNG. I tend to think of them as a good gauge of market prices. As I said, I had plenty of time to kill this morning. Sure enough, there it was:

No question about it, the exact same coin. It sold in a CNG eAuction back in 2015, final hammer price $70. Even with CNG's 15% fee and shipping it still might have been under $100 in total.

I'm curious what other CT members think. Is this a coin that slipped under the radar in CNG's eAuction or a decent coin that is over priced?Buying coins from CNG then doubling the price would seem to be a poor business model. I'm not sure a dealer would stay in business long doing that, or at least sell many coins.

He got a bargain, these typically will go for (roughly) $150 - $250, depending of course on various factors. I think this is a solid $150.

$60-70 seems to be the low end of what they bring on CNG. I think what he is asking is fair in a full retail setting.

Seems about right for one of these coins. The big Ptolemy bronzes are rarely budget pieces at retail. You might have better luck in an auction.

Out of curiosity I decided to check CNG's sales record and go through all the last 10 years sales results for Ptolemy III. I found 17 hemidrachms which were close in quality (of course that is subjective). I left out those very high quality and those low. There was a high of $220 and a low of $60 with an average of $131. Adding in fees that is exactly $150.65 on average. So...I guess my estimate was right on spot.

That seems to be SOP for the dealers I’ve seen at shows which is why I mostly buy from auctions.

That's high in my opinion, I've seen many larger Drachms sell in that price range. Here is one I sold in less condition on eBay and while searching CNG found my coin for sale less than a month later.

Didn't work for them as it sold for the same amount I sold it for.
