busted nose Jefferson?

I found this recently and it seems the bridge of the nose is missing as compared to a regular Jefferson. It is a 1997 D. Kind of reminds me of the "detached leg" 2005 bison error. I figure it had to be an over polished die. Opinions?

looks like post mint damage to me ,and it's very hard to tell by the little pics I could tell somewhat by the little pics that the coins looks very damaged.

I've noticed it also. Maybe a weak strike, polished die or along that line. Nothing special.

It is the result of the die being overly abraded.

Also, the coin shows effects of wear. The wear though has nothing to do with the nose looking the way it does , in this case.

    Thanks,
    Bill

Yes, the coin shows the effects of intentional die abrasion ("die polishing").

Is this something common in the nose area?

It can affect any low-relief area. The bridge of the nose is an area that's commonly affected in Lincoln cents. I have not bothered to observe its frequency in nickels.

I have seen quite a lot of it on Jefferson Nickels. It often effects the bridge of the nose.

    Thanks,

If I enlarge it anymore it looses clarity. :(
