Sorry for the lower resolution pics, but can you make any judgement based on what you can see as to whether this has been cleaned or not? or what the grade might be? It's currently housed in one of those white plastic holders with some other half dollars. These are the best pictures I can provide at the moment. Thanks for your thoughts.
Most likely yes, but "cleaned" and "harshly cleaned" are two different things. Still has decent luster. If no cleaning scratches it might be graded market acceptable. My worry about the coin is the higher points look too bright. Do you see cleaning marks on the high points?
I have to assume they're through the case, and unfortunately the coin isn't in my possession at this time. That's the picture that's available for me to make a decision as to whether to buy it or not. I seem to recall a debate about "cleaned" versus "harshly cleaned" a while back, so I don't want to open that can of worms again. Thanks for the input so far, I appreciate it, working with what I have.
Lots of times these 'old guys' (Frank included) have received a cleaning of one form or another......
You got that right , that's why finding an original skinned Busty can be so hard . Then you had reputable books telling you to clean your coins with baking soda paste among other ways , something we'd never do today was a common practice years ago . I remember getting the 1st VAM book on Morgan and Peace dollars that had this info around 1975 . And promptly wrecked a nice AU Standing Liberty Quarter with said information .
Thanks for the feedback folks, but I decided to go in a different direction. I got a "use it or lose it" 10% off coupon from eBay today, so I was looking at auctions that ended today, or with BIN on items I was interested in. I ended up picking up some 5 ounce "pucks" from an older year (before I started my subscription). Here's the item that the above picture came from. http://www.ebay.com/itm/390296906138 It was on sale for 9% off, plus I would have taken another 10% off on top of that, making my net purchase just a bit over $600 for the set. However, I was concerned about the cleaning, and they didn't have great pictures... or any pictures of some of the other halves, so I decided to pass. But I appreciate the comments. Always learning on this site.
I'm still planning on making a "type set" (if I'm using that term correctly) of half dollars. I have a weak example of a Barber, a half-decent Seated, an awesome Walker, and plenty of examples to pick from for Franklin or Kennedy. I'm still working on the earlier halves. The pucks are just a sideline.
