Today I got a 1953-D wheat and a 1946 nickel in change today in the same transaction. I saw the nickel first and thought "cool!" then I saw the penny and thought "wow!"
The Friday night/Saturday morning graveyard shift was special. I found the following pennies: 1907, 1944-Dx2, 1969-S, and 1973-S. I also found a 1993 Canadian penny and 1952, 1957, 1958-D, and 1960-D nickels. The 1907 is the third Indian head that I've found so far this year. The '44-Ds were both in the same customer wrapped roll. The funny thing is that when I was about to go through the roll with the IHC in it, I joked to myself that I was going to find an Indian head in it and sure enough there was one. I wonder if it was in circulation for the whole time, if it sat in the bottom of a milk jug full of less interesting coins and was dumped into a Coinstar machine, if it was once a part of somebody's treasured collection which was broken up and spent at face value. Noting its condition, it might well have been in circulation the whole time. If I've found 3 in the last 7 months, then there must be thousands still out their waiting to be discovered. Don't give up, just keep searching those rolls.
My overnight shift was fruitful. I found 1939, 1940-D, 1944, and 1957-D wheats; 1959-D (2), 1960-D, and 1960-S pennies; a 1960-D nickel a 1983 Canadian quarter; and the find of the night: a 1963-D dime. A customer spent the dime. I didn't even realize it was silver until I went to put the change in the drawer.
Here are some of my latest finds: 1946, 1951-D, 1953-D 1955, 1958, and 1964-D (BU) pennies; 1973 and 1975 Canadian pennies; 1939, 1940-D, 1949-D, 1952, and 1960-D nickels; a dateless buffalo nickel; 1974, 1975, and 1988 Canadian nickels; 1974, 1976-D, and 1996-D half dollars; a 1972-D Ike; and a Series 1974 $1 bill in fair condition. The same guy paid with the buffalo and the Ike.
Over the last two weeks, I've found the following: pennies: 1937-D 1942-D 1950 1951-D 1956-Dx2 1958-Dx2 nickels: 1940 1941x2 1941-D 1946-D 1947-D 1949 1952 1953 1954-Dx2 1956-D 1959-D 1960 1960-Dx2 halves: 1971 1971-Dx3 1972-D 1973-Dx2 1976-D Canadian dimes: 1975 Series 1988A $1 bill And for the finds of the fortnight: 1945-P silver war nickel and a 1967 40% silver half dollar. I love me some cheap silver. The half is in good shape, while the nickel is nearly black.
Went to the dump yesterday with my son to trash an old couch. He got out and started unloading. I got out and noticed a bright, shiny, Quarter on the ground right next to my rear tire. Picked it up and kept it (was a 2014D Great Smoky Mts one). Crazy that it was there. Course it didn't pay the dump fees, but still kind of neat.
Well I'm no longer at that job so this thread will most likely die out. Lately I've found some interesting coins such as some silver dimes.
Sorry to hear you've changed jobs. I think we can all try to maintain the thread because I know other folks routinely run across "finds." I'd hate to see the thread die!
There is a small convenience store in the apartment complex I used to live in. I got to know the owner while I lived there, and he stuck back any coin larger than a quarter that he received for me. I got lucky and got a 40% Kennedy (1968) one day and I got an Ike but it was mostly post-1970 halves that he stuck back for me. Today I was visiting my friend who still lives in that complex and walked to the store to buy a Coke. The owner wasn't there, instead a woman was working there. I heard her talking to another lady behind the counter and it was obvious her English wasn't very good. She rang up my Coke and I asked her if she had any "big coins" and she said "yes". I thought she just didn't understand me at first. I was thinking maybe she had a clad Kennedy or possibly an Ike if I was lucky. She pulled out a large coin and my heart started racing. I thought it was an Ike (which would have still made me happy) but my jaw hit the floor when I saw that it was an 1884-O Morgan! I said "I want it!" and gave her 4 quarters for it. It is obviously nowhere near AU condition but has a tad bit of yellowish toning. This beats any of the finds I made at my old job at the convenience store by a long shot. I'm still in shock but I'm buzzing. I'm guessing it's VF or XF, what do you think? Is it worth from $30-$40? This was the find of a lifetime. It's strange that I got this one after I quit my job at the store.
I don't get to search money at my new job like I did at my old job, but I spotted a 1958-D wheat last night.
I found a 1942 and a 1959-D nickel in a roll at work. I figured out what the protocol for bcoins is at work. I won't be going through nearly as much change as I went through at my old job but if I do find something. I will post it here.
I used to be a store manager at a convenience store and made a similar collection. A year ago I switched to designing highways so I've been having major coin withdrawals. The struggle is real.
