    It never got dark. Was outside? Mosquito's. Land of the "Midnight Sun"?

    Looked possibly like the coin was just barely covered by the vinegar. In that case the acetic acid could have been consumed early in the 24 hours and there was nothing left to react. If you don't have a surplus of reacting agent, and the solution is not agitated the area around the reaction site become depleted and the reaction either stops or greatly slows as new reactant has to be brought in through Brownian motion.
