On the reverse, above the word cents, you can see the metal forms what looks like an eye. Could this be a mint error?

If you want to get the date? You can soak it in vinegar for a few days maybe a week. Check it or flip it. You’ll get a date
Vinegar? Wow, that's a stinking way to treat a Buffalo. Do you add oil after and then use it to make a salad?
It's probably better than putting acid on it. That was approach for many years. The design of the Buffalo Nickel left the date exposed. It wore of the coin after a decade or more in circulation. Oddly enough, the mint thought the "FIVE CENTS" on the reverse would go first, which what there is "mound" and "Line" or Type II Buffalo Nickel. Type 1 Buffalo Nickel, part of 1913 Type 2 Buffalo Nickel, 1913 to 1838. Note the ground under the buffalo's feet.
