Well I started trying my hand at cherrypicking some varieties... Kind of last minute here, I came accross this and am considering purchasing it... But I wanted a little help from you all first... Are you familiar with the buffalo nickel varieties? If so I could use your help!! Is this image one of the 2 1/2 feather varieties? I think it might be, but I just can't tell for sure! Check out : http://www.coinworld.com/news/081604/bw_0816.asp for more on the subject if interested! Your help would be appreciated as the auction ends in a few minutes!!
Here is a different one as well, this one appears to have been cleaned, the third feather is faint, would you consider this a 2 feather variety, not looking to buy this one, but I'm curious about the 2 feather and 2 1/2 feather varieties!!
Sorry can't help you there DAK. I have no knowledge of Buffalo coins. It does appear like a different kind of variety according to the CoinWorld link you provided.
To answer your question DAK, It is the two feather variety. There is generally another feather right behind the neck and under the last long one.
DAK, below are the dates for the 2 feather buffalo nickle variety that are listed in the Cherrypicker's Guide you should keep an eye for. 1913-D Type 1 1915 1917 1917-D 1917-S 1918 1918-S 1919 1920-S 1921 1921-S 1925-D 1925-S 1930-S Lou
I just checked my Buffaloes. I found a 1916 with 2 feathers. What does it mean when it is not listed in Cherrypicker's Guide?
The Cherrypicker's Guide can only list so many varieties. I'm sure there are more dates than listed for this type of variety in the Cherrypicker's Guide. Lou
The two feather variety was caused by over polishing the die. So in theory it could be that everyone of them can be found?
I doubt that you can find everyone, unless you manage to steal a lot of people's collections. However, if you mean every date, then sure anything is possible. Many just haven't been listed yet.
According to the article, almost every year from 1913-1930 have had a 2 feather variety reported! I have also seen a 1916 myself, I got it in a roll last month...
The reason I started this thread is because pictures can be deceiving, especially on ebay, just wanted some help to verify what I thought. These where both ebay auctions, where the seller made no mention of the variety, I was just hoping to cherrypick ebay as I would a coin shop! Thanks guys and gals!! DAK
I did in fact mean a full set. Obviously I didn't mean that one person could have everyone of the coins that are out there. But, this is cointalk and you have to make sure that you are perfectly clear in what you type or you get a remark by somebody like this. :headbang:
I just picked up a 1921 S 2 Feather in a roll of coins I purchased on Ebay. It was a nice surprise even if it does only grade VG.
Yep, that one coin was worth the price I paid for the roll. I was expecting a bunch of dateless Buffs, but got a good assortment from the teens and twenties with quite a few mintmarks too most of them in VG - fine condition, definatley a seller I will visit again! -Daniel
