So, I was over at my dads house last night. Good night for me. He is mainly a stamp collector, but has a nice variety of old coins that I sometimes talk him into giving/trading me I talked him out of a VF rainbow toned common morgan, and an AU/BU morgan for my type set! I also got a 1913 type 1 buffalo from him for my set, and swapped out some of my lower grade common coins for better ones that he had. I just LOVE my dad..... My interest in coins recently skyrocketted over the last 4 months, and he is my biggest supporter since he has been a hardcore stamp collector for 50 years. He does collect coins too to some extent, but is recently getting more into it. We made a pretty cool discovery last night. He had some buffalo nickels that he had received from my granny, but they were laying raw in a tray with a bunch of other junk coins, and he never took them for much. We decided to take a look at them, and what do you know....there was about 15-20 semi-key dates in VF-EF condition! The best find was the 1926-S in VF+ condition. He also had a 1924-S F/VF and a total of 5 1931-S in VF/EF( one of which he gave to me):mouth: and a 1925-D and a few others. He was so excited, that he dusted off his old album of buffalos and filled in many key-date blanks with the new finds, and decided he wanted to start collecting them again. He also gave me about 20 common buffalo duplicates he had, so I could start a small collection. What a fun night!! Could anyone estimate the value of these? I only have the PCGS guide(which I know is inflated). It lists the 1926-s in F-12 at $90, then skyrockets to $1000 for the XF. We found several raw ones that looked about like his sell for $150-$200 on ebay, so I would guess it is in that range somewhere. Anyways, just thought I would share...:mouth: John

Well back I guess it was 2 years ago the 1926-S in F were selling for around $90 and the VF around $450. I found one graded by PCI a F15 that I thought was under graded, paid $110 for it and sent it to NGC....came back VF. I later sold it to DLRC for around $260. If I remember right they took a loss on it when they sold it. The last time I checked it looked like the value had come around $200. How much detail does the Horn have?? Remember...you don't grade the 26-S like other dates. This year is known for a weak strike so you almost always bump the grade up one point. Speedy
Ok, this is an extremely strange stroke of luck, but a strong indicator of how much I need to learn about Buffalos. Since my dad had given me a bunch of freebies, I decided to go back and look at the 7 or 8 that I already had for years in cardboards. I didn't think there was much of anything, but I opened one that said "1926", looked at the back with a magnifying glass, and sure enough; it had an S!! So now BOTH my dad and I have 1926-s buffalos, and neither of us knew we had anything!!! What are the odds of that? This date and mintmark also happens to be the most rare overall(not including the varieties), at least as far as mintage goes. I think his has a little more detail(though I would need to compare the two). Mine has about 2/3 - 3/4 of a horn, and the "1" in the date is kind of worn, though the rest of the date is clear....so I doubt it would grade VF. I will take a pic of both of them together when I get a chance. -JB
