I happened to find this online in my usual afternoon auction browsing and wanted to share it with the forum here. This isn't a pretty coin by any means, but it's better than some which I've seen and has a neat story behind it.

I won't be bidding on it but I had to do a double take when reading the PDF from their auction as I definitely wasn't expecting to see an EID MAR there.

    Enjoy :)

Estimated by Spink at 3000 - 5000£. Your 100$ will pay the auction's catalogue :)

    Err, yes.

Seen a few numbers quoted, 46, 75 etc.

I'd expect the above to outsell that estimate, even in bad shape its a coin on many, many wishlists.

Hmmmm, I'm sorry but coin-collecting is definitely a bit like chasing tail ... ummm, there has to be at least a tiny bit of "animal-attraction", otherwise it just doesn't feel right ("put this bag over your head and then everything will be a-okay")

... yah, that coin may be rare, but it ain't doin' it for me!!

Oh, but I definitely love livin' large through your coins, AncientJoe!! (amazin' stuff!!)

Same. I mentioned in my top 10 thread of mine I would only get rid of my very first ancient for and EID MAR but there is no way I would for this wretched example.

Now I would a couple or morgan dollars since they're junk to me, lol.

:D I'd easily pay that! Here's a situation where I could buy a very nice Athens owl tet or this coin--I'd pick the Athens tet.
I know it has rarity and historical interest, but it's not too appealing to me for aesthetics, but I'm sure this coin will sell without any problem.

I thought the same. Even in that condition, i would guessed $10-15k.

ok. little competition : what will be the result of this auction ? coin is in poor condition, but extremely rare and of historical importance... my guess ? 6500$...

Saying the provenance of being found in the UK, it may sell for a bit more...

    Spink Estimate: $4,500 to $7,500.

    My Estimate: $7,500 to $10,000

A pile of rock from me... I wouldn't even trade my dirty underwear for it (unless someone would be willing to pay 5000$ + for them :eek:dd:). That is one ugly coin imo, no matter its history :dead-horse:

I find it interesting that us ancient collectors tend to be able to live with some problems with ancients from time to time but yet nearly all of us poo poo even wanting what is considered the holy grail of ancients cause this thing is in such bad shape.

Ain't that the truth. Personally, I would love to have an Eid Mar coin, even in this condition, but I cannot afford it. I think I'm going to have to start buying lottery tickets or something.

The only way I would consider this piece is if it was under $500. No way would I go higher. The reverse tells the story more then the horrid obverse but still if your gonna drop 5 figures on a wretched holy grail, at least have some look of brutus on it.

I think this coin is estimated too high. If it blows past it then I will have to use a dolly to carry my dropped jaw around.
