BU rolls found at my local bank today, what should I do next?

    Good afternoon all
I went to my bank today to get my usual amount in coins for a search and the teller told me someone had dumped a large amount of quarters which were sealed but written on. This peaked my interest so I asked her if I could take a look and ended up buying them all as they were sealed as she stated. My question is should I cherry pick out of the list below and send off to be graded? Some have the usual bag marks but other than that they are pristine and the populations for top grade is few and far between. Any help would be very much appreciated as I would not want to waste my money if you guys think grading would not be worth it. Many thanks in advance

Unless you are confident that they will grade at least MS68, it would not be worth it to submit them.

Thank you for the reply. To be honest I only have slight knowledge of grading from looking at slabbed coins and talking with my LCS when I go, I’ve also watched some videos that were made by PCGS regarding grading. I know that’s not enough knowledge though so should I take them to my LCS or cherry pick the ones that have no bag marks at all and post them on here?

Even if there’s potential for ms68 or higher?

I'll be honest with you, I was submitting state quarters to NGC at the time they were just being released by the Mint, and I would routinely sell MS68's for $150 to collectors who wanted them for their Registry Sets. Maybe they could have sold for more, I don't know, but it made it easier for me to unload all of them, quickly. I haven't kept track of what they would sell for on the current market, so you should check recent sales prices (not asking prices!) on eBay.

Thank you for the info. Lol I would never go by asking prices and was thinking more for myself as I would love to own something that was a top population coin that I found rather than purchased. I was looking at the PCGS app and maybe it’s not updated but it doesn’t seem to show anything above an MS68 for some of these coins so was thinking if I found something that nice I would try my luck but if so many of you are saying I should save my money I will listen and just put these aside and maybe go back to them in 20 years lol.

My approach to grading is to educate myself and authenticate coins. It's a work in progress, I'm not good at spotting lightly cleaned coins and I can't really tell an AU58 from an MS63 most of the time. I have become pretty good at determining lower grades in the coins I have a lot of focus on (SLQs). Accordingly, I take advantage of the CT special pricing at ICG and sometimes submit inexpensive coins that I'm curious about ($10 per coin for US coins, plus shipping and insurance - so I always submit 10-20). If you are looking to resell and are going to submit to PCGS for a big money slab, then I'd take a dozen or so of what you think are the best to the local LCS and ask for an informed opinion (maybe take coffee) and then, if you get an knowledgeable opinion that they may be top grade, submit them. That's my 2-cents.... (1864ish)

Thank you for your two cents lol. It will help me determine what to do when the time comes. I may take another look over them at some point and if I feel there are a few worth sending in then get a second opinion on them ( by someone in hand ) before I do. I haven’t attempted to grade any coins before I just look at each type on an individual basis and use the PCGS photo grade when possible to try and get a like for like on some of my older coins but I’ve never gone any deeper than that so I’m looking forward to possible giving it a try and seeing what I come up with. Thanks again

Look at Mintage Numbers too. I am pretty sure the 2009 are lower mintage and I would save them. Actually, I hold onto all BU rolls I find it'd just a thing I have......LOL
I looked at eBay and I don't see sold prices really making it worthwhile to grade them for resale...….HOWEVER ….if you want to grade them for your own collection and getting a TOP POP.... if you can afford it, by all means submit a few of the best. Down the road they may gain value.

Thank you for the reply. I decided not to open the 2009 Hawaii P and D and will probably hold onto them for a while ( although not opening them is killing me lol ) I am slowly going through the rest and it’s crazy to see the amount of bag marks there are on brand new coins when looking hard enough for them so I know the ones I’ve looked at so far won’t grade where I want them but as soon as I find ones that I think are suitable I will be posting them up on here for some second opinions

The 2009 ones will be the territories quarters. Guam, Puerto Rico, N.Mariana, District of Columbia and …(drawing a blink on #5). Anyway, check out the mintages. Whoever dumped them may have been getting them from circulation, rather then BU rolls. Either way it is a nice find!

    edit: (I remembered. American Samoa)

American Samoa that’s the one lol. That’s what I thought at first but every roll has been an older type that has faded over time and has had all of the same coin and mint mark which is why I decided not to open the last two. I checked the mintages which are relatively low and it also states on the PCGS app anything that looks to be higher than MS67 with the S mint mark should be sent in to be graded.

btw....the D of C (Duke Ellington's) have a know Doubled die error on the reverse. I don't remember if it's on P or Ds though. Fairly Obvious DD as I remember.

I will take a look for that when running through them later, thanks for the heads up. Also I meant the D mint mark on the American somoa S was a typo
