By popular demand I am giving away an 1925 BU Lincoln cent. This coin is out of a hoard of coins I recently purchased. This is the prize coin! Depending on what this particular coin grades it could be worth hundreds of dollars if send off and graded. Trust me, its really really really nice.

Entering the contest is simple. Tell me what the first coin you ever purchased was and why. I will select randomly a winner on Friday. Only one entry per person on this one. GOOD LUCK!!!

Hi Matt. Great coin and thanks for the contest. The first coin (rather set of coins) I bought was just a circulated set of Jefferson war nickels for about 8 bucks. I am kinda a WW2 buff and just liked the history associated with those coins even though the set was well circulated. I have a nice BU set of those now.
Thanks again for the contest and nice grab on the Lincoln hoard.

When I started collecting in the mid 50's, you could get most wheats out of circulation. I never did get a 14-D or S VDB, but I did find the rest. Finding red Lincolns from the 40's and 50's was easy, but not from the 30's. I started buying them at the local coin club mostly for about 25¢ each. However, I really cannot remember just which one I bought first.

My first coin was a 1881-S Morgan Dollar. When I first got interested in coins, my dad showed me a Morgan Dollar his grandmother had given him. It was an XF 1886 and I thought it was the prettiest coin I had ever seen.

A little while later I discovered a little coin shop in my town and went in. To my surprise...he had many examples of that beautiful Morgan all over the place (at the time I knew nothing about coins...but I recognized the design). I found one in the case that I could afford (it was $20 or so) that was in great condition and I bought it. I still have it and it is one of my favorite coins.

On the 2x2 in was housed in it just said "BU" as the grade. Once I began to learn more about coins I realized the first coin I had purchased was actually DMPL.

Not fair! This tired old mind does not compute that far back. It was either a 09 VDB or a 57 FE, not sure which, but I still have both coins. Just HAD to have it!

Lol I was a little different to say the least. I got into coins just a few years ago after my grandmother passed away, and left me a small collection of coins, mostly V nickels but a couple of Morgans too. So I got really interested in Morgan dollars, I first bought Bowers Red Book Guide, then Wayne Millers book, and probably the most important of all, I found CoinTalk!

So finally after about 4 months of saving up, I bought a 1881-CC PCGS 65. It's still my favorite coin today.

The first Coin I ever Purchased:

Well, I've always liked to say, that I've never bought from a coin shop, but I have, and now it is coming back to me, like it was yesterday...I'll never go back to that coin shop again...
I bought, what I thought at the time, was the most beautiful coin ever. A 1922 P MS60 peace dollar. It was not graded, and I found it later it was no MS60, more like an AU with a little luster, but had wear.
I loved that thing, I bought it for $30, and I just stared at it. When I got home, I stared some more, it was the single most beautiful thing I'd ever seen, and I wanted to go back to his store.
I learned more about coins, and the grading system, and quickly discovered that this was no MS60, but it was still a rather nice coin. I sold it recently for $15, and although I can't say I regret it, I might want to see that coin, one last time. I think I bought the coin hastily, but I was like a kid in a candy shop, I just loved the thrill of buying my first coin, the dealer had all sorts of coins, but I was drawn to that one peace dollar, like it was calling my name :)

Mine was a 1944 1 Indian Anna Coin.

One of my friends brought it to school one day when I was in the sixth grade and I was absolutely fascinated by it. I thought it was real "treasure", LOL! :D And that's what started it all..... after that day he kept bringing more and more coins in and I just kept buying them! So I went to forums like this and online stores like eBay and carried it on from there! :)

The first coin I ever purchased from a dealer (as opposed to buying from my cash register at work) was a 1941 Walking Liberty half-dollar. It's one of the most beautiful designs of US coins, in my opinion, and can be had at a good price even in AU+ grades, depending on the year. The one I purchased was in low grade, and only cost less than $10.00, but has led to me trying to complete a set of all years in MS (not likely in the next 20 years!)

    Thanks for the contest:

I collected as a kid, but never bought any and when cars and girls came into the picture, I forgot about my hobby. On March 6, 2009, my father passed away and left me his collection. This has rekindled my interest in coins and I have enjoyed this hobby more than anything else other than my family. I love this hobby. My first purchase of a coin was a extra fine Franklin Half (actually 5 of them) to fill 5 holes in my father's (now mine) Dansco. The first one then, was a 1948-D with near full bell lines for $10. I'm down to 2 holes in that series which I hope to fill sometime this year.

    Thanks again.

After buying coins for Garrett for years, the first coin I ever bought for myself was a really pretty yellow toned 1885-O MS64 Morgan Dollar from Lehigh. :thumb: I love it!

The first coin I bought was a 1880-CC Morgan Dollar, it was one of three coins I purchased from a man I worked for that bought and sold collections. It came with a 1882-CC and a 1853 three-cent silver. Sad part was that the couple that sold that collection, sold it for a little over spot silver. They just wanted to sell the whole group(about 125 coins) because silver was high.
Wish I could have talked them into saving them for there Kids or Grandkids.
    Thanks for the contest.

I was helping my parents get their house cleaned up and ran across some coins and the bug hit me. Went on ebay and bought a coin lot for like $114. Thought it was goood deal at the time, found cointalk a few days later and found out I got ripped. No silver coins. Just a bunch of junk. Guess thats the tuition. Cool contest idea.

The first coins that I ever purchased were a PDS set of 1943 steel cents from a local coin dealer. It was more than a decade ago and I was about 10-12 years old and thought that only a couple of dollars for such strange looking wheat cents was an excellent purchase! I really think that this was the first time that I ever saw the steel cents.

I can't remember the first coin I bought. It was too many years ago.

I CAN tell you the first coin I bought when I got back into it many moons ago.

An 1833 Bust Half Dollar. This was a big move in our household (me and my wife). After all I was looking at dropping $30 on just one coin!

My dad would buy coins for me when he was on business trips. He had no clue but one of the first was an 1866 Two Cent Piece. Eventually that led to my fascination with that particular coin.
Still have that coin and only wish he were alive to see the set(s) I have now.
