Hey Guys. I have been looking through the greysheet, and came upon the brown Eisenhower Dollars. I have noticed that the brown Ikes are more expensive, compared to the Blue Ikes, and the circulated Ikes.

I do understand that they are 40% silver, but does the Brown case really increase the value?

I know a local coin dealer was talking to me about some Morgan Dollar in a Carson City case (at least that is what I remember) is worth more than without a case.

So, would a case really raise the value of the coin, or if I planned on purchasing Ike Proofs, just pass on the boxes altogether?

    Thanks Everyone,
    Greg B.

It's all in what you collect Greg...some folks like to have it in OGP. Others could care less. Me, I always opt. for OGP.

I collect the "brown box" Ikes also. All of the ones that I have are in the OGP and thats the way I prefer it. I guess in some cases the OGP may make a difference in the price.

The brown Ikes are Silver Proofs, the Blue Ikes are Unc Silver. I think the 73 Brown is a real sleeper.

The Brown Ikes, proofs, were minted in lower numbers then the uncirculated Blue Ikes. That along with the demand would cause the price to reflect what you see in the Grey Sheet.

The cases the Brown Ikes come in are easily opened. So whether they are encased in their O.P. or raw, they must be carefully inspected before purchasing.

I find this type coin to be easily acquired in sets of BU condition.

Good Luck and Keep on Collecting!!!

Yes, thats a good price for any of them. They were minted and packaged in brown boxes for four years 1971-1974. Which one did you buy?

Very nice Jon. Easily worth at least 3 times what you paid for it. Are you going for the rest of the "brown" Ikes?

probably not, i like Ikes but i am not much of a proof collector. picked this one up because the price was good and it was for a good cause. i will probably hold onto it and then sell it on ebay or some where.
