Picked this up at local shop. Appears to be an over polished die in the obverse. Honest Abe appears to have a floating nose and poor definition to the nape of his neck. I did a search, but have not found a variety attribution. Any help is greatly appreciated.
Appears from photo to be a grease filled die area. Not considered to be a variety as it is not a feature of the die itself, just the machine lubrication. Jim
I thought that initially, but the area under the tie is gone, the neck lacks clear edges, the back of the head is lacking hair, and the folds in the jacket at the 5 o'clock position are missing design elements. These are not the areas where grease tends to collect. Also, there is more space between igwt and the top of Lincoln's head than on a normal cent.
Lincoln looks a little small. I have seen a few of these in hand I think that they are from an over abraded die.
The over polished die is how I am leaning. Picked up it, an 1876 cc dime(dark vg), 7 common Indian cents in fine, a slight clip Indian cent, and a 1939d AU+ Mercury for $26. Errors are not a focus for me, but I will grab them when the price is right.
