I expect once a few more of the PCGS coins "approved" i should hit 200. add a couple more decent coins and I might break into top 100 lol (honestly this doesn't seem to speak well for NGC Registry) Oh and that doesn't include my AU58 1878 liberty head G$2.50 because it's ANACS certified
I may not be able to buy the "best" slabbed coins, but I do tend towards key dates and low mintages.. that ups my points quite a bit (hell my 2005 satin finish SAC$1 SP68 is worth almost 800 points alone lol not top pop but only 150 or so 69s above it)
Awesome. Well done! I don't do the registry but maybe I should take some time to try to put something together. mine would be pcgs, I have it but not updated. The best in the end is whatever you want it to be. You have good taste I'd say. Even if not all of your coins are the "best". (in the eyes of who? )
NGC accepts PCGS coins for registry sets but It doesn't work the other way (well you can enter them on PCGS but they don't count towards your point total) NGC accepts either (but with approval required on pcgs slabs and takes a lot longer if you don't post a pic when you enter the coin)
Yeah I gathered that. I have nearly all PCGS, although I maybe have 30 slabbed coins or so..? Maybe 3 NGC and 4 ANACS. I catalogue them on Numista and a spreadsheet and that has been enough for me. I am just fearing becoming one of those who puts too much into the label rather than the coin. I've done well so far, though.
I know that feeling, I have quite a few ANACS certified coins that I can't use in either of the online registries (pcgs/ngc).. Oh i can enter them (and have) but they don't count towards that point total/rank... It has actualy made me question a couple coins I liked enough to bid on... but that's the whole point I buy the coin... not the plastic.. but same coin/price... yeah PCGS/NGC slabs win (oh and the ICG slabs don't give any points either so i need a nice presidential dollar in an NGC slab at least it's a cheapie unlike the gold)
I think more people should give the registries a chance. I don’t know anything about PCGS’ registry but NGC recently revamped theirs a couple years ago and it’s really good. There’s no charge to use. Just your time. Really easy to add new ones using the slabs serial number and can use NGCs photos or your own. It displays them well and is always accessible. The points system is cool but not the only reason to do it. Some people sour on the registry because they think that it’s only about points to use it but to me that’s secondary. It’s there. Yeah it ranks you vs the rest, but there’s nothing scientific about it. I find some of it a little silly. I couldn’t tell you how they come up with the points. Some make sense and some don’t. In general the more expensive the coin along with higher grade, the more points it’s worth but not always the case. I just get whatever I like. I’ve got a few details graded ones in my set because I liked them but it reduces their point value. If I want a higher registry score I could replace them. There’s 128 coins in their US type set including moderns. Some are pretty much unobtainable.
What is this about? What is the registry thing? If you have a bunch of perfect PCGS / NGS slabbed graded coins they give you additional attention? I kind of think that's what this is. Nonetheless, congratulations on some beautiful coins. I have some sweeties in ANACS, ICG and raw.
It’s basically just a free online database to showcase your collection based on the type of sets you select to do on their website. Points are automatically assigned to grades but your rank doesn’t really mean anything. You enter a coin in a slot by it’s unique slab number. You name your set whatever you want. There’s registry sets for everything. NGC and PCGS does them. NGC accepts PCGS slabs but they require additional approval from ngc once you submit the addition. You can start one even if you only have one coin for the set. Then you can log into your account on any computer or phone and view your set. The same website you use to verify an NGC slab or use their price guide has the registries. Anybody can go look at them. Some sets have no pics. I post pics for every coin in mine. That’s over half the purpose of it to me.
For the NGC registry offers a place to help educate collectors about coins. I have posted photos for every coin I have on the registry, and they all have write-ups. I need to go back and fix some of the write-ups. Frankly I am not impressed at all with the registry sets that have no pictures and no write-ups. That is especially true for the top rated sets. I stopped doing very much with the registry for a while after they stopped taking PCGS coins. Now they are accepting them again, which was a good move by NGC. It shows that they are more interested in education than PCGS is.
I have to agree John, I like the NGC setup much more then the PCGS one, and including both is the "right" move IMHO. I've got pic's up for most of my coins now, adding a couple more each day until i got all of em done.. but like I said, I'm really surprised that I'm ranked as high as I am as not even 1/2 way completed as yet. Can't say I agree with their "point" assignments though.. my 2 top point coins are both in the $35 dollar range, one at 800 (satin finish Sac$1) other about 674 (eagle comm 1/2 at pf70) while my 1895_0 morgan is worth only 25 points in the type set but 400 in the morgan set... just doesn't seem right
This is so true! I don’t have write-ups for all my coins, but at least pretty good pictures. Sometimes it can be disappointing when looking at some of the top sets and there are no pictures at all.
Great start @mrweaseluv ! In my opinion the US7070+gold is one of the most interesting sets. Except for 2-3 coin types such as the Classic large cent, anybody should be able to add a decent example. I am trying to make the top 50, but there are still a coin or two missing...
Now see, your score is much more what i expected to see... surprized I'm as high as I am with a not even 1/2 finished set...
The point system gives a disproportionate number of points to high grade modern coin relative to their market value. I think that this is built into the system to encourage intermediate collectors and bolster the high grade modern coin market. As for the point differences for your 1895-O dollar, you have to look at the role the coin plays in each of the registry sets. The 1895-O dollar is a better date in the Morgan Dollar set. Therefore it gets more points. BUT in a type set, where high grades are encouraged, a well circulated Morgan Dollar is not a big deal because there are many common dates that can be used in the set that grade MS-63 or higher. Here you are expected to have a Mint State coin in the slot.
@johnmilton I can see that.. and yes I ended up using my 1884 MS63pl in the type set for that very reason, but I still think the 95 undervalued for the type set.
Yeah, you'll find in the type sets, if you are trying to maximize points there's no benefit in chasing the rarest of the type unless it's only a one year type. All that seems to matter is the grade per type. I think so many types point values are way under valued. Like the 1921 Peace is undervalued. The 3 cent silvers are way undervalued based on availability. The type 2s are so limited and pricey in higher grades. And only 4 years to pick from. A proof red wheat cent that was fairly easy to find and only like $50 is worth like 2800 points. Used to be over 5,000. While a type 2 3 cent has to be MS to even break 1k. That's why I say the points and the ranking are just "ok" to me. I don't agree with the conclusions and there's no clear cut explanation as to how they come up with them. But somebody put a lot of work into it.
That's been my thoughts exactly. I've even asked them on the boards, how do you know if people are even being truthful? It seems you could just enter in slab numbers you find online and if nobody else uses it in a registry set, it's considered yours even if someone else buys it. I'm sure most are probably legit and people are just lazy but I wouldn't bet a 100% are being honest. I don't know what the point is of doing it if you don't at least add pics.
I just upgraded my type 1 SLQ. Now I only need about 100 pts more to make it back into the top 50. That’s the new coin: Keep us posted on your progress
