British Saxon Coin - Eadred? Help with Moneyer please?

    I bought this penny off a dealer today - it came to me identified as Edward the Elder, but after much searching through North, I suspect it is actually Eadred. Firstly any one in a position to confirm or refute my thought?

    Secondly, I am having difficulty with the Moneyer - I have compared against the lists in North for all the Saxon monarchs around that time, and have found no match I am entirely happy with. Any one got any thoughts? Or do you have other references that may help?

    Thirdly, I hope you can just enjoy such a lovely piece of history from around 900 AD, even if it has sustained damage down the years.

    I do not own any sources for these coins and I know nothing about them but I must say I do like this coin and the time that surrounds it. What you have sone is expose me to a coin I never saw before and now want to acquire. Sorry I cant help you, but thanks for sharing.

    Thanks for all the positive feedback! Yes - this one is definitely a keeper for me - the third Saxon coin in what will probably prove to be a very slow building collection. All I still need to do is track it down exactly so it can go into the album with chapter and verse attached.

    Thanks again,

    Paddy

    paddy looking at my book Anglo-Saxon pennies by dolley I think that it is Edward the elder possibly issued by archbishop plegmund of Canterbury but he shows a different moneyer ---how about spink 1087----not certain so keep looking

    Thanks for that Phil (Wyvern). Sadly Spinks is very thin on the ground for these, and it is only in JJ North you discover how many variations there are, and how similar are the two line coins from Edward the Elder right through to Eadgar.

    But I think I have my answer from another forum:

    "Eadgar 2 line, NE variant. N 741, moneyer is CAWELIN/CAPELIN depending on whether the Saxon P for W applied in the north-east"

    Certainly seems to fit! Thanks for all your efforts.

    There seems to have been a large horde of sceattas found recently for anyone wishing to buy coins from this era. Sceattas are not as cool as pennies to me, (since they are so thin), but still it is an unusual opprtunity right now to acquire 9th and 10th century British issues.

    I hope the prices on the bronzes (the sceattas?) go down a little, if a hoard was found. Cheapest I found (and Ive looked at a good number of online places) was around $55-$70. Its a bit frustrating really. I dont have a Saxon coin yet and would love to add an example to my collection without shelling out big bucks.

    That is a pretty good price. CNG had some large lots where the prices of course were much cheaper per coin, but there were like 100 or more in a lot.

    Great coin Paddy => sadly, I have a huge abyss in my collection from 622AD - 1236AD ... and your coin falls dead-center

    => Super-cool coin!!

    :high5:
