Howdy Y'all, I was looking at some of my British India coins, and I noticed a line on this Anna quarter. Is this a die crack? (pic comparison below) And check out the elephant! Thanks Aidan
Since it's just on the bust and not in the field AND it's relatively smooth and linear I would characterize it as a die scratch.
I look for one or more of several features for die cracks: -- the ridge travels to the rim, and/or -- the ridge travels in part along the edge of a feature, and/or -- the ridge is a bit irregular/jagged. I won't say "No" to it being a die crack, but for now I'll stick with a die scratch.
I think it is a die crack and here is why. It is a very fine line and it is continuous. If you lightly scratch the field of the die you are likely to have a fine relatively straight line. But when you lightly scratch across the irregular surface of the cavities of the dies design your scratch is going to skip and jump from one area of "high relief" in the die (low relief on the coin) to the next and jump over those areas of "low relief" in the die (High relief on the coin). A crack, being in the actual body" of the die will tend to be continuous and affect both high and low areas equally.
