There apparently are two types of threes on 1904 3 pence coins (KM#'s 797.1 and 797.2). I've searched my books and the web but can't find much more than that the shapes differ. As best as I can tell, the shape of the top bar may be a bit different (flat V. curved), and there may or may not be a difference in the engraving inside the 3 (hard to tell from the pictures). Does anyone know a more definitive answer? TIA for any info you may be able to provide.
Courtesy of my looking into the 2014 Standard Catalog of World Coins, here is what I found:. KM 797.1 weighs only 1.3000 grams, 0.9250 Silver, 0.0387 oz ASW, 16.1mm KM 797.2 weighs 1.4138 grams, 0.9250 Silver, .0420 oz ASW, 16mm I stared at the photos for a very long time and couldn't tell the difference otherwise. The 3's look the exact same and I can't find any oddities in the design. Hopefully you have a gram scale or one of those incredibly expensive devices that detect metal percentages.
I didn't notice the weight and composition differences as the description said the 3's differed, so that's what I focused on. I was hoping for some indicator that I could while search at coin shops, etc. Nonetheless, you have given me something to work with when I find one. I have a gram scale and a set of high end calipers, so between the two, I should be able to ID the type. Thanks for the info.
Well, I haven't been to many coin shops, but I would guess that any respectable one you go to has its own gram scale. Best of luck!
I own KM#797.1 (year 1902) and KM#797.2 (year 1908). I have a gold weight and micrometer: There is no difference in weight or diameter, nor in design... So why KM give two numbers (797.1 + 797.2)???
