So I was browsing coins ending in HA today, and... http://coins.ha.com/itm/roman-provi...3044-30054.s?ic4=GalleryView-Thumbnail-071515 This attribution makes zero sense. Britannicus was 13 year old at his death, not an adolescent. Not to mention, the coin was struck more than a year after he was killed (feb 55), Words of the death of prince would had failed to reached pontus after a year? Well, somebody believed it, there's a $3,000 bid on a drachm with portrait of Nero... Nice portrait though. I'd love to have it for few hundred bucks, and reset the starting point of my "nero getting fatter" series...
Well, if you go to Wildwinds and search for Pontus, the first couple of coins look like this one. Pontic Kingdom. Polemo II with Nero. AR Drachm. 56-57 AD. ETOYC IQ, Laureate head of Nero right / BACILEWC POLEMWMWS, diademed head of Polemo right. Seems more likely.
So the polemo II drachm with nero portrait sold for 6k incl buyer's fee. That's pretty insane... All that from a misattribution. Good for the seller, well done!
Well, there is always new research and new attributions going round with some of the more obscure things. However, these typically sell under $500.
In general I am now looking at the pecunem auction damm those prices are going high, just made some bids on Rhodes coins do not know why, I am drinking wine, wonn 3 at the lowest price, prob that is is ok. So looks like many people invest in coins, not so so bad, but I see a bronce from Gabala I like....280 Eur already, a normal bronz...pufffff too much for me
I'm now certain that I won't win anything from this CNG or HA auction. Probably nothing from the eauction next week either. The one after thanksgiving usually work out well. People are so concerned over Christmas shopping they don't bother with coin auctions.
You can sometimes get luck in late January/early February too. Those who are successful in the auctions would have already blown their budget!
