Breaking Mint Sets to send in for grading

I have a 1957-P US Mint Set... the coins are spectacular! I don't see any flaws, except the bands on the dime are not struck very fully. Full steps on the nickel. I'm looking at these coins and they are perfect from what I can tell looking at them through the plastic.

I compared these coins to my 1987 mint set and 2005 mint set. There is just no comparison... the newer sets have tons of nicks on the rims and sometimes a few marks on the surfaces.

Given the very high values of some of these coins in the higher grades, is it worth breaking the set up and submitting all but the dime to PCGS?

What are some defects that I might look for that I might not be noticing?

I'd scan it so the experts can give you an estimated grade, if its like PR-69 UCAM then I would totally send it in.

This is a MINT SET, the coins don't have a lot of cameo but the nickel is particularly lustrous. I will try to get a good scan up here. Kind of hard through the plastic though.

Plastic? The 1957 mint sets were packaged in cardboard holders not plastic. If this is a mint set in a plastic holder it has already been broken up and has no premium. Are you sure it isn't a proof set? They WERE packaged in plastic ploifilm like the mintsets were later from 1959 to date.

No. If the coin is Heavy Cameo, then submit. If just regular Cameo, consider if high grade. If no cameo, don't bother. The cost of grading is more than the coin will likely be worth.

Hairlines, which are very difficult to see in plastic proof sets.

The goverment-issued holders for the 1957 mint set consisted of thick cardboard rectangles with attached paper flaps that separated the cards from each other. individaul coins were inserted into precut holes of the proper size. This info is from RON GUTH BOOK U.S. PROOF SETS AND MINT SETS.

sorry did read close enough. 1957 is not a great year for any denomination, unless you see a serious ms 67 coin or ms 66 Franklin then no way.

You're right... this is a proof set. It was hard to tell because none of them have any real cameo. It's not worth getting graded. THanks for the hlep guys!
