We were going through some of my grandfathers old stuff and we found an old Brazilian coin collection. The collection starts around the mid 1600's with a few 1643+ coins, then almost one or two coins from every year in the 1700s and 1800s and a few in the 1900s. The haighest valued coin is 200 reis, but most are between 100 and 960. We are looking for a dealer to take them too, but I wanted to see if anybody was knowledgable on the coins or if there were specific high valued coins i should be aware of. I have very little coin knowledge and I am afraid we will be ripped off. Thanks for your help.

    Welcome to CT!

I know very close to nothing about Brazilian coins, but it sounds like you stumbled upon quite a treasure!

First things first - Please do not clean them.

Next, be patient. Unless you need the money yesterday, check around. Take a few coins in to a few different dealers and ask for their opinion on them so you can get to know both the dealers and the coins a little better.

Thank you Sir. I have seen some auction sites and stuff and some of them have been going for around $1,500. I am sure many are not nearly that much though. I have been told to not clean them lol, but thank you for the reminder. i believe we will shop it around and see what we have. Thank you very much for the feedback.

It can be quite daunting to dive into Brazilian coinage. You have some issues that were counterstruck, or overstruck, and sometimes the value of the coins can be when it is a coin that survived or avoided getting counterstruck (when it should have been) or counterstruck (when it should not have been)....

Luckily, you can do some research on eBay (do take the selling prices with a grain of salt) to at least get a sense of what is common and what is not. Like any coins, condition plays a big part of the value - mint state coins will always be desired. I would certainly echo the advice given above - do not, under any circumstances, clean the coins. If you are intent on selling, then the more homework and time you invest into this collection, the better your return should be.

    Good luck!!
