Not bad for a coin I was handed for free I know clashes on these coins are common, but I see a double clash, so I’m doubly happy.
I pened an article about the double dies from Brazil yeah those clashes are very common on their coins, and ddo's & ddr's are also..I saw a seller on ebay trying to sell these.... Let me find ths article and post
Brazil Brazil has given us so many wonderful things! Coffee, the rain forest ,the girl from Ipanema….but one of the most exciting gifts from Brazil to a numismatic world is some of the most radical doubled dies one can imagine. I was fortunate enough to meet a Brazilian on line, whom befriended me. His name is Walter. Walter was so appreciative to my help on some of his U.S. coins, he insisted to send me a gift. One cannot imagine when I opened the envelope to find these wonderful doubled die coins. So many times in our hobby newbies have a difficult time distinguishing a true doubled die specimen from machine doubling. There so many doubled dies some right in your face, others leaves one scratching their head wondering how could this even considered a doubled die. It seems that the 1990's Brazil minted some of the most radical doubled dies. As a variety collector I mostly focus on U.S. variety coins….however as a collector aka “coin hoarder” I do have quite a few world coins in my collection. Some very nice specimens, but none that are varieties like these Brazilian Centavos. As a variety collector one does search for certain specimens, but lets be real the odds of plucking a 1955 DDO Lincoln cent from the wild is….well lets say just about impossible! So if one wanted a specimen with such pronounced doubling one either needs a good buddy as Walter, or to search Brazilian coins of the 1990's. I venture to say if one would buy a lot of Brazilian coins from the 90's the odds of scoring a sweet Doubled die would be very possible. And as an added bonus Brazilian coins have some real sweet clashed varieties. Some with triple dates! Correct a date on the coin, an inverted date over the head as well an upright date clash. So if you want to find a nice doubled die specimen to add to your world collection, or just want a in your face example of this variety one only need to look to Brazil.
Gall durn it. Now you made me have to dig out my World coins and go through the ones from Brazil. I had so many, I never even bothered to check any of them. Just threw them all in a baggie.
I need and check up on Walter! This thread made me realize he hasn't been around....well not since 12/24/22. He did write me an email he had gotten covid....then the civil unrest after the election in Brazil. I feel bad...as I cannot believe that this fell, off my radar...Im usually better than this.
I did fire off an email to Walter...and received an answer this afternoon. Walter is well, he has been busy And had a few bad experiences in the hobby. A fake purchase,as well a seller who didn't send his purchase. Understandable a bad taste could deter one from wanting to get back in the game. But he is ok...and doing well.
