anyone know the value of these error coins?? and how canyou tell the difference?? I have found a few that have a different color then normal, is the visual the only way to tell??
I don't know about being plated, but I do know red lincolns can be found in a variety of colors due to toning or just small differences in metal composition.
Other than tests which cost way more than the value of the coin, color seems to be the key identifier. I am sure you looked at this site. http://koinpro.tripod.com/Brass.htm Jim
found 3 that have the yellow they do stand out with a yellow tint, does PCGS,NGC, or anacs slab theyse as error coins??
If you're right that they are plated, they aren't errors at all - just the results of someone experimenting, probably in a high school chem lab.
Actually, it's not even that complex. By heating a copper plated cent, zinc will diffuse into the plating and change it's appearance. Just toss one onto an oven top burner and watch. You should also try it with a regular copper cent, it's an interesting experiment! It will also teach you exactly what a heat-treated coin looks like.
