I am new to this, but I need some info on Brasher Doubloons. I have a coin that my father left me upon his death, it may be a 1787 Brasher Doubloon with an EB punch on the wing. Does anyone have any info on how I may find out if this is real or not? Please help. I can send a picture of the info I have on this coin and how I have come to believe this is what I have. Thank you for any help and info.

Don't bet the farm on its being genuine. Here's a picture of one of only seven known:

You can read more about them here.

Thank you for the information, the coin I have does "look" just like this.
For now it is locked away in a safe deposit, I just don't know how to go about having it checked! My Father came upon it when he was in the Navy many, many years ago. Any hints on who I could contact to see if it is genuine or not?
Thank you again for your response.

Unfortunately, if he got it in the middle east or Asia, he got it from a hotbed of counterfeit and forged coinage.
If it were mine the first thing I would do is check its specific gravity to determine if its weight is consistent with the metallic content of a real piece. You can probably find instructions on how to do that with a quick Google search, or maybe someone will supply the information here.

If it passed that test, I would either consult a reputable auction house or dealer who handles that type of high end material, or submit it to one of the top tier third party grading companies for slabbing. That approach would either cost $100 or so for quick results, or a long, long wait for results of an economy submission.

Check this forum for other threads on grading companies.

    Good luck!

Thank you for the good information. I believe he got it in Japan. What that means...who knows! I will have it checked for specific gravity and go from there. One can hope!!
I will also check the threads for grading companies if it passes!
    Thank you again!
