I recently read an article on CoinWeek that reinforced an idea I've been playing around with in my head, which is that instead of collecting full series of coins by date as I have been doing, that I am thinking it will be more fun to collect by Type. This article introduced me to the concept of a "box of twenty", which is a variation on Type collecting. From the article: (great article by the way, you should go read it: http://www.coinweek.com/featured-ne...grades-for-beginning-intermediate-collectors/ ) I really like the idea of limiting my collection to twenty really nice coins, from a variety of denominations, time periods, and maybe even countries. While I had fun *almost* finishing off my Proof Kennedy's in PF69UC, boy 80+ Kennedy proofs seem to start to all blend togeather. Plus, in my experience it's NOT very fun/informative to show 80+ very similar looking coins to a non-coin person. So, I have totally come around to this concept of a "Box of twenty". My box isn't made up of crazy expensive rare coins (yet), but so far I've filled 10 slots with a nice variety of interesting coins. I am going to slow down coin buying to only a few a year, and get prettier more interesting high quality coins instead of just "filling holes". When my box is filled, I'm going to start swaping out lesser coins for better examples. Maybe in 10 years, my 20 special coins will really be a nice little show-and-tell I can dazzle my guests with. Right now it's rather humble, but without further ado: S$1 1923 NGC MS 65 CAC S$1 2012(W) EAGLE EARLY RELEASES NGC MS 70
For my next purchase I am saving up for is a 1940's Liberty Walking Half Dollar PCGS/NGC MS65 CAC. I also want to get some color in this Box of Twenty, so hopefully in 6 months or so, I can get a beautiful rainbow toned Morgan. Also, want to give a shout-out to gbroke for introducing me to his site http://thecoinnection.com/Public, for hosting these images you see above, and also for just being a darn cool dude. Anyone else here collect along the lines of this "box of twenty" concept? Show us your coins! :hail:
I think the idea of a Box of Twenty (Bo20) is a very good option for some collectors. Likewise, collecting year date sets, complete regular issue sets, variety sets and type sets is a great idea for some collectors. The Bo20 concept calls to some, but I have found that many will comment negatively on the discipline. For my own collection, I adhere loosely to the idea of a Bo20 by attempting to incorporate only wonderful coins. This strategy necessarily limits the number of coins that I own. At this time I may have 75 or so coins and I have been collecting for a significant period of time.
Heres is another article about a box of twenty. http://www.usrarecoininvestments.co...ecting_investing_a_box_of_twenty_the_idea.htm
I have 3 boxes of 20 with 11 empty spaces. I'm selling about 25 coins next year so I'll be down to 2 boxes of 20 with about 16 empty spaces and a few bucks to add a coin or two. Good luck on your box.
i think that different preferences in coin collecting is an important part of coin collecting;so i would say collect in any manor that makes you happy first.just collect is my method;which i am sure is improper since organization is considered important.
...nothing wrong with no organization. You should've seen my collection 15 years ago. I had forgotten about some of the coins. Got tired of them and sold them all a few years later then started over.
thanks for saying that i'm sure you are well underway with your new collection.starting fresh with experience will probably make this collection all the better.
Yeah, it seems kinda crazy to me too. But I am getting tired of lots of $20.00 coins that are nice, but not amazing. It's going to take come real discipline on my part, but I am very confident that if I have the willpower, the resulting collection will be much stronger in a few years. I doubt I will ever be able to afford $1000 coins, but I think that there are plenty of $150-$250 coins that will really satisfy me in terms of condition and quality, and something that I will be proud to showoff to friends and family. Thanks for looking!
Yeah, quality with a variety of interesting, colorful coins is calling me right now. Ultimately I think only a few of the above coins would be kept once I start putting this method into practice, the Peace Dollar for instance. Thanks for sharing.
Looks like you are on the path to consolidation, getting your collection down to the really important coins to cutting out the chaff. At this point, I dont plan on selling the cheaper coins I've spent a few years collecting, but ultimately it may be something I will do. For now, I'm going to focus on quality and alot less quantity for future purchases. Actually, currently I have been buying ZERO coins as I save up for a future purchase and getting my general financial house in order.
Thanks for posting this, I'm reading it now. I probably will never be filling the box with technical rarities or with an aim at the investment side, but they will be rarities in my book. My box of 20 will be for hobby purposes only, and I'll keep the investments to a passive total world index fund. I wonder if there are other Bo20 articles? Heading to Google...
If you limited yourself to a box of 20, what would you be willing to invest and how would that be apportioned over the 20 coins? I would probably go in approximately $30K with about half that invested in 3-4 coins and the other half split about evenly among the remaining coins.
I do like this idea. While not likely that I'll have box of super rarities I think for myself I am going to consider it more like a finest 20. As I love my albums and sets I doubt I could ever bring myself down to just 20 coins. In the end it will probably be a set of 20 slabs. As it stands I only have about a dozen slabbed coins, all extremly nice coins I couldn't resist even though they don't fit in my albums lol
