stopped for a box of cents today. I thought the last box I got was completely full. The dollar amount inside is correct but the box seems like it's not as full. Just odd. Not complaining. Maybe they're wrapping the rolls tighter. Who knows. I am on the hunt for a box of new cents and have not been lucky to date. How about everyone else?
How many of you saw that picture and immediately looked to see if there was a wheat cent visible? I did, without even thinking.
I stopped at my local bank last week to get a box of cents, and for the first time in my experience, I was asked for my name! I was told that they do this when they have a 'cash exchange'... but I've never had to provide my name before. One of the steps to a 'cashless society'?
If anyone is looking for the new 2017 cents with a P mint mark, be patient. The hub bub is ridiculous over these and will eventually die down. One seller on Ebay is asking just shy of $600.00 for a box and none are under $100.00 a box Buy It Now. Even the descriptions are ridiculous..."Rare", "First And Last" coins (cent) to carry a P mint mark, etc.
It's because banks are getting tired of the people who do nothing but search coins and then dump them (somewhere) back into the banking system. It costs the banks to order these boxes. It's not free like some think and it is not a "right of the customer" as some think. Chris
It would be nice if a huge corporation treated their customers as a valued part of their organization. I have no problems to date with my bank. They have all been nice at every branch. They don't have to do it, you're right. I can't see how coin roll hunters put a huge burden on a bank that makes money off of your money.
It costs the bank to have the coins counted and re-rolled. It costs the bank to order and have the rolls delivered. Commercial customers at least put the coins into the economy. Roll searchers don't! It won't be long before all banks will be forced to charge customers for this service. When was the last time you found that air for your tires was free at gas stations and/or convenience stores? Chris
This morning at Wawa the air was just as free as it was the other day. They still do it. I'm not disagreeing with you about the cost. the banks, especially the large banks make more than enough to cover the cost of coin roll hunters. Small niceties like this that are being taken away are a larger example of how greed is destroying our society. Golden parachutes and insane salaries.
The days of banks being family are now gone forever. Those that have not merged with other larger banks are also on the stock market. Bottom line is, profits, profits and more profits. In order to keep the shareholders happy with higher earnings is to eliminate chores like coin counting, ordering, storing, etc. Although the U.S. will lag behind the larger world, we are ever slowly moving towards a cashless society. Have you ever looked at the yearly statement sent out describing fees? Mine is three pages long. There was a time when I could sit in a chair at my bank, back in the 60's and go through rolls one at a time and then promptly exchange and start all over again. Purely nostalgia now.
Did you count the rolls? I thought I counted 50 rolls which would be right for a $25 box. The only time I ever got shorted rolls, two of them no less, was a nickel box. But I didn't complain because I found an 1889 Liberty and several buffalos to offset the loss.
Oh yes, they were all there. What I was saying is that usually the rolls take up the whole box. I was wondering what changed. I know in the past I saw that circle mark on the edges of the coins. I could not find any in this box which is good.
I received a box not too long ago that looked short about three rolls, but it was a full count of 50. Probably some of these cartons are not up to normal size specs.
Greed? That sounds a bit hypocritical to me. What do you call the people who go into a bank and expect to get coins at face value so they can sell them at a premium or melt value? Chris
I never said I wouldn't pay a fee to get coins so I don't fancy myself as being hypocritical. It does sound like we disagree on what greed is. Look at it whatever way you want. Not important to me what your opinion is of what I do. It appears that you have a problem with coin roll hunters or you're generalizing all of us in to one "entitled " lump which doesn't look well for you. My apologies if we caused you any strife with this thread.
While I don't roll search as much as I use to I would argue that I put plenty of coins I got from the bank back into the economy when I did also I agree to a point about banks getting charged for coins to sort and reroll and order so it is fair for them to charge a service fee for those that don't bank with them but for someone like me who does thousands of dollars in business with 2 different banks who make money in interest and other fee's if I was denied boxes of coins or charged to get them I would start doing business with one of the plenty banking instituitions around here. And there are still gas stores that offer free air around here the therory they have is if they offer little nicities like that you are likley to do business with them and thats where they would make their proffit and they are right in my case at least because thats where i get my gas.
