My daughter and I just finished searching a box of pennies ($25), and compiled various statistics. I thought some of you may find some of the data interesting.

    6 Wheaties (36D 46D 49D 55D 56D 57D) .25%
    6 Canadian Pennies .25%
1 Penny with a cross cut out of it

    31.6% Copper Pennies
    68.4% Zinc Pennies

    By Decade (excludes Canadian):
    .4% Pre 1960
    5.2% 1960's
    17.6% 1970's
    22.6% 1980's
    25.6% 1990's
    28.5% 2000's

Of the 1980's: 37.4% were copper, 62.6% were zinc

Of the 2000's, the distribution was (we didn't analyze the other decades by date):

    17.8% 2000
    9.8% 2001
    7.6% 2002
    9.6% 2003
    10.1% 2004
    15.0% 2005
    30.1% 2006

Except for the fact that there was a large number of 2000D's we found, it felt like a large number of these guys drop out of circulation each year (into penny jars?).

And stat's that only my daughter and I might care about: No 1973s and no 1961 :( (last two in her penny book)

Man, I went to bank a few days ago and got $10 in pennies, someone must of gotten rid of their collection or something. I have only 70's and 80's, there was the occastional 1960 and 1990, but 95% of the coins were 70's and 80's. I did find one wheat, but I lost it in the rubble. :p

Facinating statistics. I'll have to record what I find in boxes out here in Arizona sometime. I wonder how different it might be!

I think another kind member already has sent some my way. But if need be, I'll call you on your offer :). Thanks.
