Hi everyone, I bought a roll of quarters and found a 1983 quarter I was on youtube a while back and watched a video about the 1983 quarters and why you should save them. So I was pretty excited to find one, just wanted to share Thanks
hate to burst your bubble, but your quarter is just a 25 cent coin not worth saving, the '83's need to be in near perfect condition to be worth anything...
Although I have no idea of exactly what the mentioned video told you, please be very careful about taking anything coin-related you find on YouTube as gospel, and this includes larger channels with many subscribers/views. The fact is that for a majority of such channels, the goal is not to educate or assist you but to profit from your quest to learn. Case in point: just last week we had some clown posting videos to the forum in which he claimed to teach the viewer "everything" they need to know about certain types of coins in 60 seconds, and even going as far as to claim that watching would make you an "expert". Said clown also openly admitted to the fact he was doing it for views as well as for profit, and should tell you everything you need to know about the source. Unfortunately, your coin is in rather rough shape and isn't something that's ever going to be worthy of a worthwhile premium. However, I do hope you'll view the experience in a positive and beneficial way. Not only have you learned something, but have also experienced the thrill of discovery, and is what this should really be about. Who knows... there's always next time.
Only Mint State, or About Uncirculated 1983's are worth keeping, but those are. Here's the rub - most have been already removed from the commerce flow.
@BooksB4Coins Yeah, I did not bother to watch any of the 60 second ones. A couple of Silver Searchers were enough for me. Self promotion in this hobby is a no, no for me. Can anyone say Ken Potter. So far, I've never seen Wexler or Ribar doing this, although Wexler has done some decent books.
You certainly didn't miss anything, although Mr. Quickie's response to me was rather amusing. I also wholeheartedly agree about Potter, even if for no other reason than the "Strike it Rich" nonsense. Although I never bought the book, I did have a couple copies, including one literally thrown at me by potentially would-be collectors disgusted by the fact such a well-known hobby name would release such misleading garbage. That said, I haven't a problem with making money off of this hobby, but there's a right way and a wrong way to go about it. Crap YouTube videos from folks claiming to only want to help others and/or the hobby in general, filled with ridiculous claims, garbage info, or misleading nonsense designed only to get clicks is certainly an example of the latter. Garbage books not worth the paper they're printed on is another. Still, knowledge is valuable, but it hobby-related or in any other field, so someone possessing it and willing to put in the time and effort to compile quality reference material deserves to be compensated for their efforts as long as there's a demand for it. Truth be told, I've never quite understood the people who seem to think hobby-related knowledge must be given freely, and will openly fault those who disagree all while seeing no problem with charging for the same in other areas. Just think about however many years you've invested into acquiring what you possess and compare it to someone demanding to be paid due to, say, their associates degree. If anything, the fact so much knowledge is given freely in this hobby only goes to show what a welcoming and special niche it is.
Thank so much for the information, I've been looking at coins for a little over a year now and having said this I know I have so much to learn. I buy coins once in while just for the fun of finding colorful coins and wheat pennies, I'm not one to think that I will find a six figure coin. I really love posting on this site, the information I receive has been helpful. Thanks again.
My apologies for going so far off track with the post you quoted, but please understand it wasn't directed at or intended to be about you. The earlier one was for you. And for what it's worth, we all have a lot to learn and anyone who tells you differently is lying, especially to themselves. Each and every one of us can learn something from the next person, and is one of the most exciting parts not only of this forum, but also of the human experience. Glad to have you aboard!
The simplest answer is that it is a combination of two factors - 1) low QC that year, and 2) no mint sets that year from which to snag nice pieces.
Goodness no need for an apology, I honestly appreciated what you said also I went back to youtube to try and find the video but could not remember the persons name but...I did find this video and it was the 1983 P that are considered scarce. I do have a couple of those that I found last year but of course not in good condition. Thanks again for the info. Have a great week! I watched it and aside from wanting to vomit throughout, I can promise you it is utter GARBAGE. Did you notice how the guy begged for subscribers/shares/likes as well as for the viewer to be sure to check out his "store"? This this the entire point and purpose of the video, and is also almost certainly why this piece of excrement thought it a good idea to so blatantly mislead his viewers. The example used - an 83-D PCGS67 - was beyond laughable, especially considering the fact that he was quite clearly suggesting similar or even better coins can readily be found in circulation. He provided no back info on why said dates can, in high grades, be valuable even though it was suggested in the beginning he would do just that. What we have is nothing more than a pitifully misleading pile o dung as well as yet another needless black eye upon this hobby. For what it's worth, this guy's name sounds very familiar, yet not in a good way, and I cannot help but to think he was mentioned in another fairly recent thread. The point is that even based upon this one video, it would be very wise to avoid him in the future. Thanks for posting the link, though. At the very least, perhaps this will serve as a warning to others who may happen to read this thread.
Come to think of it, if interested in this subject, perhaps consider searching out past forum posts by @cladking. If anyone on this forum can address this in an educated and intelligent manner, he's the one.
I don't care for this JB Coins. Every minor MD is a new doubled die discovery that he has made. So instead of informing the public, he is misinforming them.
THANK YOU! THANK YOU! I never share links! I copied and paste and what is so sad is that people like me who want to learn and search listen and yes I guess sometimes fall for what they have to say. Having said this if I have questions this is the site to ask even if they are dumb questions, I love the honesty & humor. Thanks again. Done with Youtube coin video's!!
