I recently bought a pound of world coins, looked through it, and no silver from what I can see, and of course no gold, but some very nice. I'm going to photograph every one of them, and was planning on posting the results here, from each Country. Up first, is France. Enjoy!
nice, I still need one of those KM# 885 aluminum-bronze ones. I'm up to about 15 pounds bought recently and only 1 silver so far.
Those types, made out of nickel, show a lot of die stress usually, which can look like doubled dies. This includes 1/2, 1, 2 and 5 Francs
The 1973 doesn't have any doubling on it, it has a near outline of the date, but I think it is due to what Billyray said. Wow, 15 lbs, and only one silver, that is somewhat surprising. The one coin I did think was silver was a 1949 Half Crown from Great Britain, but I checked only to see, there was no silver.
Well, good thing, for me anyways, is that I got a few coins I'd actually been wanting to add to my world coin collection, and I have a reason to photograph the world coins now. Some of the coins just have rockin' designs, love them! And I got one very nice toner, 5 Rappen, I believe, from Switzerland. I'm also working on another World Coin deal, bulk lot, for a $1 a coin, with one of my buddies.
Well, once again, buying it from a friend... I'm not really tight on cash at the moment either. I'll post Part 2, Italy, tomorrow.
For tmoneyeagles, something I thought you'd enjoy. I picked this up a short time back and I really like it.
Billyray, what is odd is that I almost wanted to buy a 5lb lot! lol Blsmothermon, that is a nice looking coin, although pics are a little small. I can't completely make out the date, is it 1927?
It's a 1924 Chambers of Commerce of France (officially a trade token/replacement coinage) "Good For 1 Franc". Interesting to me for its history to the monetary life of France.
I have been tempted to try foreign coins by the pound, just to see what IS behind door number 2. Just out of curiosity, how do you store your worlds coins?? I presume in 2x2's?? At least for me, the inexpensive world coins seem to multiply a LOT quicker than the collectable US stuff does.
If we're posting our oldest French coins... Counts of Poitou, in the name of Chalres le Chauve (the Bald) AR denier Melle, late 10th cent. + CΛRLVS REX FR small cross pattée within circle • / MET / ΛLO in three lines across field cf. Poey d'Avant 2428
Curio Bill, I store them in 2x2's. That is a nice one Billy Ray, even worn French Coins look beautiful. But of course...MS French coins look good too...
