Stopped by the coins store on the way home from school today and picked up this nice possible PL Morgan. I think I got some ok pictures of the coin...

P.S. These markings are on the obverse of this coin. Anyone know what they are? Are they simply damage?

marks look like a hit by the reeded edge of another dollar.

however they also look raised, which wouldn't be what would happen.

    nice coin !

The way the light is reflecting It looks raised to me as well?

The first and third photo made me think no more wine tonight :)

The second and fifth photo made me think I should trade in these Kennedy Halves I'm collecting for a few nice Morgans...;)

I will be interested to see what others think of those marks. If you can show other anlgles of them to verify if they are raised or not it would help I would think.

Thanks for sharing such a nice coin...

Your quite welcome. And yes, After examining the coin in hand, I believe they looked raised as well..

When I first saw them, I thought they were the sort of spots one sees when a coin is struck from pitted or rusted dies.

The fact they are raised adds credence.

If so, one would expect to find many coins with the same exact pattern - i.e. a VAM variety.

If it were damage, every coin is different. There would be no others with this exact damage pattern.

Damage detracts from value - VAM often adds value.

Is that an 1881-S ? I'll check my VAM book.

Yes, it is an 1881-S...I already checked some online VAM resources and didn't see anything resembling this coin....

    what's the grade ?

Reverse is easily a MS-65, even MS-66 Brilliant PL

I can't tell the obverse as well without a flat-on shot like you have for reverse, but it looks like a solid MS-64, hard to go MS-65 with that whatever in front of the lip. The PL's show any mark so easily.

So I guess this coin was probably a good pickup at 35 bucks=p?

almost looks like little beads of silver solder melted above the coin and allowed to drop on it, but can't see anybody doing that.

Doug is the resident expert but to me it looks like the coin has been polished.

Ruben, I think I'll have to agree with you...there do seem to be some faint lines on the obverse.....=/

    great for $35, IMO

looks PL, not polished to me, and of course many 81-s have that look. If it was a date that wasn't normally a PL, I'd be suspicious, but this looks fine.

    srkjkd Book before coin

i'm hesitant to say this..but the coin almost looks altered to me...polished or almost plated appearance. it may just be the photos but the fields don't appear right on the close up..nor does it have a normal pl appearance. i simply defer to the experts and would appreciate gdjsmp and zanemans opinions...

Something aout this coin just doesn't sit right with me. Maybe it's just the photos , but the finish doesn't look right , maybe plated as srkjkd stated , whizzed ,polished or something else.Looks more chrome-plated than silver. I hope not but it looks real suspicious.

    hamman88 Spare some change, sir?

I had the same feeling that the tone was off. But at $35 it was well worth the risk!

Why mess with a common coin?

According to QDB: "Among Morgan silver dollars minted in the 19th century, the 1881-S is the most available Mint State. It is likely that at least half of the original mintage (12,760,000) remains in grades from MS-60 onward."

Heck a PCGS MS60 is $34 or less., a 66 is $350. If it is mess with it will get bb'd.

The low price is fishy, as its MS-60 money. I can't see whizzing a coin that is clearly unc to make it look PL, when PL's are common for the date.
