The Government put into circulation the new currency of 50 cents with the legend "Estado Plurinacional de Bolivia" instead of "Republica de Bolivia" in an act at the Government Palace. The president of Banco Central de Bolivia (BCB), Gabriel Loza, gave President Evo Morales a set of coins with the new name, and said today they begin to circulate. "We ordered the minting of new coins in all denominations, 5, 2 and 1 Boliviano, and 50, 20 and 10 cents, and will include the new legend" he said. However, Loza said that "from today and during 2010, all Bolivians will gradually take the coins that express the value of their work and the "Multicountry state" symbol. The current coins in circulation, with the legend of The Republic of Bolivia, are fully valid and will circulate simultaneously with the new ones. The company "Casa de Moneda Chile" (Chile Mint) won the bidding. A total of 366 million pieces were minted in all denominations, with the new legend, at a cost of USD 8.1 million. (sorry for the bad translation)
Don't know about the other denominations, but the 50 centavos coin in that photo has the very same look as the current one. So the country name is new (thanks, goossen!) but other than that it is not a new design; like it or not. Christian
New country name? Is the official country name "Bolivia" or "Republica de Bolivia" or "Estado Plurinacional de Bolivia" ?
The latter (E.P.B.), due to the new constitution adopted in January or so. But the "short name" continues to be Bolivia. Christian
