Hey friends, Took a quick vacation to Sarasota and thought this would be a good spot to start the silver cob portion of my collection. I loved the aesthetic of this 4R and the dealer had it at what I thought was a solid price. However, the slab says it is a 1765 and unless my eyes are going crazy I think the coin says 1766? Is there something I’m missing here? I’m new to these pieces and learning what I can so I do confess potential ignorance. Thanks for the help!
Not a Cob expert. Just trying to help. I think it could go either way but leaning towards 1766. Can you get a larger Pic of the date?
Looks like the slab is right, the enlargement from NGC shows a flat stroke on the top of the '5', and the bowl of the digit don't look right to be a '6'.
@mikebell is right, but a close-up would have been nice from the OP. The last two numbers do not look the same, and stand-alone close-ups have more definition than just zooming in from a full image. We don’t know how the NGC close-up was produced, whereas the OP could have removed all doubt.
I apologize for the poor photos - still on vacation and only have an iPhone for pics here is a further close up of the date - appreciate the insight so far!
