England. The Tudors. Queen Mary I (1553-1558). Silver groat. Phillip et Maria series. Obv: Philip Z. Mara. D.G. Rex Z. Regina. Rev: POSVI MVS DEVM ADIVTO NOS Tower mint. Sharp portrait. The first official female regnant of England. She led a revolt against Lady Jane Grey who succeeded Mary's brother Edward VI upon his early death. Upon seizing the crown, Mary's priority was to revert her kingdom back to Catholicism after her father Henry VIII broke away from Rome. A devout Catholic her reign oversaw the Marian Persecutions where almost 300 protestants were executed or burned at the stake, thus earning her the moniker "Bloody Mary". After marrying the Spanish Prince Philip, she had an unhappy marriage and Philip rarely saw her, finding her unattractive. She died at a relatively young age of 42 possibly due to uterian cancer, thus ending her dream of reestablishing Catholicism in England and passing her throne to her sister Elizabeth I.
A great coin! I am really getting into hammered coins more and more. Mary is one I would love to add.
Thanks.. her coins are scarcer amongst the Tudors. More so her reputation is quiet nasty making her coins more collectible..
Thanks..A lot of her coins have poor portraits and very worn. This portrait is pretty decent for her series..
Sweet! I collected British and English coins in a monarch portrait set back in the early 1990s. Though the collection went back to Norman times, I never had Mary. Or Philip & Mary together, for that matter. I was on a really thin budget then.
Lovely coin and laden with history. Unusual to see a portrait of hers so well defined. Very nice, congrats! My only example of Mary is this lower grade sixpence dated 1554 struck in her name and that of her husband Philipp of Spain.
That it's a great portrait on your groat @Loong Siew the two Groats of her that I picked up have suffered some serious defacement. Not unexpected given her unpopularity with the masses. @Eduard I love the dual bust sixpence you have. I have always thought of out as one of the most desirable coins of the Tudor & Stewart period. I hope to own one some day.
Thanks @Eduard .. her coins are generally notorious for their poor condition. As much to do like @TheRed said of her unpopularity and also for their make.. being thin and light. Nonetheless your piece is also excellent and is much better than many i came across as well
