Do you guys think this is a blank planchet, or a very worn Morgan Dollar .

Good morning Rick. It looks blank to me but then again, I've never seen a silver dollar blank. From your photos, I see no signs of any part of the image that should be there. I would think that if it was worn smooth, on both sides, there would be uneven wear somewhere am I'm not seeing that. :)

Good morning, I can pick it up for 39 bucks, might be a good investment .

I'd be hesitant for one simple reason. Note that the edge appears to be somewhat rounded on both sides. If this were a real blank, wouldn't you think that the edge of one side would be squared off from the cutting action?

The seller listed it as a low ball, chris .
Not sure if it's worth 39 bucks ..

Chris, wouldn't the reeded rim still be showing on this low ball ?

Why of course! Why would any of us doubt the veracity of someone we don't know?

    I'd pass on it!

I would think so. I still don't think it is a dollar blank. If you look at other blanks, regardless of the denomination, one side is rounded (as the cutting blade makes its initial contact and pushes through the upper side) and one side is squared off (when the cutting action has ended).

This. It'd either have the squarish edge of a blank, or a proto-rim from the upsetting mill. Can't imagine how the last few holders got away with spending it. :)

I think I'll ask the seller for the weight and an image of the rim . Looks sandblasted to me ..

If you do buy it send it to anacs. I'd love to picture JR sitting down with this thing for 10 minutes :)

Then I'd give it to dan carr to live life once again when he finally does another morgan

He'd take one glance, be like, "NopeNopeNope," and move on to the next coin.

IMO, piece does not look sandblasted to me and it is not a planchet. The dollar blanks I've seen have marks from tumbling together during manufacture. In a seminar the instructor called the marks "original planchet surface impact (OPSI)" marks; a term he "coined" in 1972. I have not seen/heard it used much outside a grading /authentication class.

PS AFAIK, some TPGS's stopped authenticating blank planchets years ago.

I sent the seller a message, I asked for the weight and an image of the rim . If it's a low ball like the seller think, reeding should be left on the rim ..

Even if it once was a morgan it's not a lowball. It would now be relegated to being nothing more than a 20g +/- hunk of 90% silver. Personally, if it was under $20 I might buy it as an oddity but even $20 would be a hefty premium

I think it's worth melt. A lowball is at least identifiable as a coin.
