What's up with this black dime? My neighbors said it has something to do with annealing, whatever that is, I'm still learning
Don't trust your "ugly" neighbors. Looks like what I call "environmental toning" or toning. I would like to see clearer Pics. and the edge of the coin Pleaseeee! Here's the Definition of annealing: Blanks are annealed in a furnace to prepare them for striking. Annealing changes the physical properties of the metal to make it softer and allow it to be shaped without breaking. The annealed blanks will hold the design better during striking.
The terminology is Improperly Annealed. Which in my opinion it is not. Just toned due to long time exposure to the elements. As Sal mentioned. Environmental exposure toning damage.
One time when metal detecting I found a coin spill of quarters. They were buried in compacted dirt almost 2 inches deep. They were all laying on top of each other but in a spread position. The ones that were covered were protected by the next quarter. The area that was not protected was exposed to the dirt.. Environmental exposure damage example..
Cool find on the quarta's(accent). I once found 2 IHC's stuck together and separated them. I should have left them like that.
