What is a black beauty nickel? I'm sorry if that is a stupid question.

Unfortunately, it does not look like the nickel you found is a so called "black beauty," as your coin appears to have its color more as a result of circulation and dirt than from toning. The "black beauty" nickels are usually nice uncirculated examples (often proofs) that have a pretty, dark toning.

The 1939 Jefferson Nickel is worth about $0.50 retail.
