I've been collecting world coins since I was a child. I pretty much just collect anything I can get my hands on as long as it's a coin intended for circulation (no commens for me!). There isn't always very much world coin action on the World and Ancients board, so I often peek here to see what's going on. What beautiful colors and designs! I can no longer resist the pull to expand my currency collection to include banknotes. Unless I want to completely bankrupt myself, I can't just collect "everything" as I do with coins. I must limit myself to a theme at least. I've been stuck on what to collect for weeks now, but it just dawned on me. I enjoy travelling, especially to places with ancient temples. So, it would be perfect for me to focus on banknotes featuring ancient temples and other archeological items. I have notes from Egypt and Cambodia from my trips to those countries. Do any of you have any suggestions for countries with ancient temples or archeological items on their notes? Thanks, -A.
Welcome to the Paper fourm.....we are glad you are here. That sounds like a very cool theme you have decided to collect. There are some great Worlsd Note collectors here like DeOrc, Daggarjon, ScottishMoney, Urbanchemist, and many others that would take a while to name. I am sure they will point you in the right direction if you seek their help and knowledge. Myself, I collect only USA notes..thats my choice and theme if you will. Again welcome and check the boards often...it changes almost daily! RickieB
well for a guy not wanting to collect everything lol you picked a not so good subject there are TONS of world notes that have temples AND architectural themes on them lol if you stuck to just temples you would have had a chance... but after people, most every other subject is architectural in nature, including temples not all, but most you will be busy keep us posted on your updates
Ditto.:smile Although I still consider Bank note collection as one of my secondary hobbies and I never spend a buck for any note I own except for the face value of Indian notes; all foreign stuffs are gifts. Most of South Eastern Asian countries has temples or medieval architecture in their bank notes. Nepal is a good example. Happy Collecting.:thumb:
Daggarjon was right - there's a bunch of them out there! You might want to check out the Lebanon notes, though - They are usually super cheap, and they had a series with ruins on them that were very attractive. Yemen also had a series feqaturing very neat buildings as well. Indonesia had a couple series of notes that featured traditional houses on the back, and they were only about 1-3 dollars when I bought them about a year ago.
Ok, everybody has got my curiosity up, and would love to see some pics of these type of bills. I am very interested in ancient architecture and bet bills with this theme would look great. Post-em if youv'e got-em. :thumb:
Thanks for the suggestions, everyone. Daggarjon - I think you might have misread. Archeological, not architectural. That distinction should help me out some. ViperGTS - as I've scanned in some of my Cambodian and Egyptian bills for inclusion in printed photo books of my trip, I have them to show, but haven't figured out how to post photos here yet. Perhaps I'll have to learn, eh? One other big one that I didn't think about is Greece. I checked out some pictures online today, and in addition to having some with ancient temples, Greece had some with ancient coins on them. That would be a fun banknote/coin collection tie-in. -A.
Cambodia Bills Right, These aren't the best scans, and I've only included one side of the bills (I didn't scan the other for the book I made). At least they're something to look at. 500, 1000 and 100 Riels The 1000 Riels is one of the gates of Angkor Thom. The 500 Riels is Angkor Wat. The structure on the 100 Riels is apparently the Independence Monument, which strictly does not qualify for my theme. -A.
Egyptian Bills Again, I only have one side of the bills. The other sides have important Islamic Egyptian sites on them, and are quite beautiful as well. 50 Piastres - Statue of Ramesses II 1 Pound - Abu Simbel 10 Pounds - Statue of Khafre (Old Kingdom Pharaoh, builder of second largest pyramid at Giza) 20 Pounds - some reliefs from temples -A.
On the Central Bank of Egypt 20 the "chariot" vignet is also represented on a gold coin. I believe the date is 1955... Nice notes you have there! RickieB
Well if you check out my Banknote link you will see a number of such notes that I have in my collection (Been remiss in posting recently) or have a look at DJ site he has some great stuff on there that might inspire you  I like those notes that you have posted :hail:
yes once the currency bug gets you its hard to shake it. its good to start in a clear direction when choosing what types of notes to collect. as far as foreign currency i like stuff from south america and mexico and even central america. for US currency i am not focused on small sized notes from Chicago. lol see once ya get started there is so much out there. check out my currency collection. there are some from all 4 corners of the earth almost:high5: http://www.banknotebank.com/user_view.aspx?id=urbanchemist
I sure have done a very good job of that... ...NOT!:smile If I like it I buy it, but to give focus in some particular area and make it look like I don't have ADD, I have one area, females on banknotes that is a centre focus area. But I collect anything that catches my eye, even USA colonials, and I even have a neat set of Lebanese banknotes similar to the ones above, and I would like to collect more older Syrian notes too.
Unfortunately I am the same way. I know I really should center on something, but when I see something I like and can afford - I do so. My major theme for notes currently is Dragons. My avatar is a 1905 German 5 Mark (P-8a) note. I have two of those, with a nice dragon curled around on the back. I have quite a few others, haven't picked anything up lately due to major US currency purchases draining my meager funds. Oh, well. One of these days I will run out of room, which will force me to stick to a type or two....hopefully that won't happen for a long time yet. Smaugy
