It is a mystery to me. I should be able to read the Nagari script. Maybe its a partial one. Like in a Rapper's name: Raja Sri D or something like that. As for the Arabic or Persian, I'm not sure if the coin is right side up! Maybe the letters are written in two directions. Is that a date of 700AH? Or is the coin upside down? It is a good looking piece: I didn't measure it or weigh it, but it is small. If it were a Moghul coin, it would be about a 1/4 rupee; less than 4 grams. It appears to be silver. richie
That's pretty correct reading. This is silver one kori coin from Kutch state issued by "Raja Shri Desalji II". On reverse, there is title of mughal emperor "Mohd Akbar II" and the date written VS era in last line next to "Katar" symbol. The kori with this style was issued from VS 1876 till 1889. From VS 1890, the style was changed entirely for this coin. Here is one coin I picked from my album dated VS 1877 -> Regards, Ballabh Garg
Ballabh Garg, Once again, I thank you. Being able to identify a coin that lies neglected and unadmired really cheers me up! With my "Arabic and Indian Numerals" chart in front of me, and with you indicating what the date may be, yes, I am able to read the date as 1882. I didn't know what those two "Cs" were at the bottom. I even tried to read them as if they were Arabic letters, of course to no avail. This is EXCELLENT NEWS! richie By the way, I wrote a story about a Rupee from the reign of Akbar if you're interested. http://www.worldofcoins.eu/index.php/topic,552.0.html
