Good grief! Look at the size of Gordian III's nose on this one! Post your "not exactly fine portrait style" coins! ..i can't find my Salonina's coin by itself, but here she is with some of the sewing circle being nosy..
On my example, with the Nemesis reverse, his nose appears 'normal' or even rather small.....but Tranquillina appears to have a 'BIG MOUTH' (courtesy of Ralph Kramden and the Honeymooners) and is giving poor Gordianus a piece of her mind
Quite a schnozz on that Gordian III. I have this one that looks like a Watergate era political cartoon of Richard Nixon. Or Pinocchio. It has a gouge on the nose that may've made things even worse: Gordian III (240 A.D.) (7th Issue, 5th Officina) IMP GORDIANVS PIVS FEL AVG, Laureate bust right, draped and cuirassed. / VENVS VICTRIX, Venus std. left, holding helmet & sceptre, leaning on shield at rear. RIC IViii, 131; Cohen 347
Haha that looks like he is wearing a nose clip. The reverse figure's armpit must smell terrible Cool coin @chrsmat71!
Apparently there was a die engraver working at the Rome mint in the early 90's AD that had a fondness for this nose. You can find his handiwork on quite a few coins. Domitian AR Denarius, 3.49g Rome mint, 91 AD RIC 724 (C), BMC p. 336 note, RSC 269 Obv: IMP CAES DOMIT AVG GERM P M TR P XI; Head of Domitian, laureate, bearded, r. Rev: IMP XXI COS XV CENS P P P; Minerva adv r., with spear and shield (M1) Acquired from Vaughn, January 2014.
That's quite the snout, but maybe he's compensating for poor Tranquillina's lack of one due to the dimple. I had to take a spin through my old collection's pix to find noteworthy noses. Best I could come up with. Except for maybe Galba's hooked beak or the Philip I below, I didn't see anything quite as noseworthy as you've posted.
Cool NOSE @Roman Collector ! I have a few big noses, but it may be more the Celtic STYLE: Iberia Castulo Late 2nd C BC AE As 25mm Bust Nose Hand Sphinx (Even the SPHINX has a honkin' nose!)
