Big D on penny under year made

I found this penny with a big D under the year. In the photos, I use different pennies to compare them. In those 3 pennies, the D's where different sizes. Is it supposed to be like that?

It just varies year to year.... Sometimes the D is big on the die, sometimes it's small,

 

before 1990 the mintmark was applied to the die by hand with a punch and would vary in location and size. on post 1990 cents the mintmark is included when the die is being made and will be uniform in size and location with all dies in a given year unless there is a change made to the design.

 

Nah! Everybody knows that "Big D" stands for Dallas.
