Some may call that toning but it should be called environmental damage. Either way you look at it. It is worth only 50 cents a spender.

That's a damage Half. Not a Mint Error of any kind.
Just because it looks different or strange does not make it an error. Damage can occur many different ways during circulation.

The bubble in front of his face is created by extreme heat damage. After it left the Mint.

I hadn't noticed it as a bubble. I thought it was from a cigarette burn.

I kind of assumed that was a bubble
    But maybe you're right.

The coin is very common, it has damage from the environment and that looks like a burn, cigarette maybe, but it is damaged. It's only worth face value. Not a Mint error of any type.

I'd like the OP to tell us if the anomaly is raised, recessed or smooth.

I'd expect to see this on Etsey as a rare coin worth $50.000.00.

How about a little clarity on the actuals, please. The guide notes that there are "clad coinage and silver proofs (1971 to date)" but I find no indication of the percentage of silver in these proofs. Are they 40% as were the Silver Clads from '65 to '70?

As @cpm9ball said, we need to either have better photos of the area and confirmation on whether it is raised or recused before making a guess.

These were outer layer of .800 silver .200 copper bonded to an inner core of .209 silver and .791 copper.

I think what you have is a coin that has suffered some damage. There would be no way to know how the damage occurred, I think only the s mint marked halves are silver, thus you have a clad half. It is a curiosity and doesn't have any value above face. Welcome to CT
