Assume these two coins are in your collection. If you were forced to rid yourself of one, which would you keep? Why? For the sake of this hopefully fun insight into your collecting psyche, please ignore differences in resale value. Both are MS66 CAC holdered coins. I'm curious as to your perceptions of which coin is more attractive to you and what makes it so in your mind. (BTW - This also assumes you like toned coins, so if not, this thread will likely bore you). I will tell you my thoughts a little later:
Boy, talk about comparing apples and guacemole..... I would be attracted to the more numismatic item, the 82cc Morgan. I like the toning better on the 25 personally, as I am not a huge fan of that mottled toning, but to me I am a collector and prefer more numismatic items than not given a preference. The reason I say that is there is simply more interesting stories tied to the cc minted morgan, and a philly Peace only has the story of "we melted too many morgans and had to crank out a ton of new silver dollars to back the paper currency'" story.
I would keep the Peace Dollar as I'm not much of a Morgan fan either. Besides, the Peace Dollar just looks better, IMHO.
"Keep the Peace." Potentially, the Morgan will turn darker in complexion and not be a pretty toner in many years hence. If it's color becomes negative eye appeal, that too could hurt the value or cause someone to have it cleaned and return to a blast white. At this time one could take advantage of the premium colorful toners command, should they sell it. I personally prefer the Peace design to that of Morgan dollars. I like the PEACE concept and the aesthetic nature of the design. I do like toned coins and if the Peace coin's color is true in hand as it looks in your picture, it is also as pleasing as a colorful toner, but on the Peace the color doesn't distract from the design as much, to me.
The Peace. While I like both coins the Morgan has far more bag marks and thus the Peace is the nicer of the two by far.
Tough choice. A CC Morgan with decent toning, or a stunning Peace Dollar. I would probably keep the Peace dollar, although its more common. I think you can replace a CC Morgan easier, with a better quality coin than the Peace dollar with that level of eye appeal.
I'm a Morgan person and the fact that it is a CC (albeit, common date) with some colorful toning, the 1925 is quite stunning. Peace, brother! Chris
Without a doubt the Peace Dollar. Finding lustrous monochromatic toned Peace Dollars is not easy and that one is oozing eye appeal. Finding rainbow toned Morgan Dollars on the other hand is a rather simple task, even for the CCs. And when dealing with rainbow toned Morgans, the toning breaks on this coin would relegate it to a low end toner IMO. It is still attractive mind you, but it doesn't even begin to compete with the monster toners in the series.
I'll take the Peace over the Morgan. The toning on the Peace brings out the design, while on the Morgan it's overpowering the design. The back also looks dingy.
I'm with micbraun. The Peace is beautiful while the mottled toning on the Morgan is ugly to me. Bruce
Thanks all for your comments. I'm surprised that most of you chose the Peace as I expected that a Morgan CC w/intense color would win the day given the popularity of the series. Many of you feel as I do that between the two coins, the Peace is the more distinctive coin to own. Most UNC Peace dollars are blast white and/or have been dipped. I also wonder at some of the multi-colored peace dollars whether they are truly natural. Yet, I have no doubt about this coin's original golden toning. It is really special to see in hand. So, in summary, while I like my colorful Morgan, it would be emotionally easier to release it from my collection when that time comes.
