Box of dimes or box of quarters. I know the best chance is with halves, have 2 boxes ordered. But was considering trying dimes or quarters also. Just wondering on anyone's luck with these. Would also use the boxes to fill holes in my albums.
DIMES...Though extremely difficult for either of the two, dimes seem to yield more finds. 2:10,000 dimes for me and 0:6,500 for quarters.
If you search dimes and quarters for silver, my guess is that the dollar value of the silver you find will work out to making about 2 cents per hour of work. I'd stick with halves for searching.
I got a $600 bag of half dollars yesterday. A US mint bag with 1,200 half dollars to look through. All I got was one 1969 D Kennedy in poor condition. Well I now have a nice canvas US Mint bag too! But now I have to roll up and cash in 1,199 half dollars. I think the good coins are all grabbed up now.
I would also say stick with halves. I try to find small independent banks in the rural areas. I would assume they don't traffic many halves, so they tend to get old ones. Out of ten rolls of halves, I found 3 1964 halves, plus assembled a whole roll of 40% silver halves, so not too bad.
I've found more silver dimes and quarters in circulation than from searching rolls. I've found three quarters-all in the same month too and two dimes.
dimes are slightly better, but only slightly and both are very tough! The problem is that both of thos coins circulate so people are regularly pulling the silver out, whereas the halves just sit in a vault until someone asks for them and pulls the silver out. The dimes/quarters are passively sorted by the public, but the halves are actively sorted by collectors.
Just buy a metal detector its easier to find em that way plus... ...the detector will pay for itself over time. I've found over 300 silver dimes but have been doing this for going on 8 years. I mainly go after older coins but if I went after earlier, say the 40-50s I could find a lot more silver per year but I just like the old stuff. Jim
