Hi everyone. I have been a serious collector for about 7-8 years now, but have collected casually for more. I have collected alot of series, but always find myself coming back to my type collection. There's alot you can learn from collecting a single series, but no one series could ever hold my attention long term. A couple years ago i completed my 7070. It felt so good to finish, and looks great. But looking back at alot of my purchases, i made alot of mistakes as many new to the hobby do. Recently i have decided that i want to assemble a more complete type collection. I want the most high end, well struck coins i can afford for each type, but what i really want to focus on is a strong full strike on the coins. For me collecting is both about the art and the history. I know there are many coins in many series that are known for mushy/weak strikes, and others that more often than not are hammered and have amazing detail. So my question for all my fellow collectors is this....for each series, what date/mm combos have the strongest strike characteristics? I know a few like the 1881-S Morgans and 1938-D buffaloes, but what about the rest? I want to do this collection right, and i am using it as a big learning experience. This set will take me a lifetime to complete, if i ever complete it to my satisfaction. I thought this would be a good learning tool for all, experienced collectors and new alike. Thank you everyone for your help in this journey, and i look forward to learning alot! Dont forget to post those pics.. we all like some coin eye candy! Sent from my SCH-I545 using Tapatalk
I suggest for your clad dime, try a 1996-W. They were only in mint sets and are pretty nice, plus the uniqueness of a W coin in there is neat. Walking halves, there are some really sweet 1945's out there, but stick with Philly or Denver, not SF.
1825 Half Dollar O-111 or O-112 are very nicely struck. They are among my favorite varieties of the capped bust halves.
Well the 7070 albums is the only album I'm looking into so, bookmarked! Also the 1881-0 morgan dollars have a very nice strike here's mine. Sorry for bad pictures. Thanks, Jacob
I'll toss in 1909 Lincolns and the last few years of Half Cents and Cents, for consistent good strike. 1917 SLQ's. 1940ish Jeffersons, in the early years of the enhanced-definition "Reverse of 1940." WWII-era Mercs. Three Cent Nickels? Buy a Proof.
Yes, yes, yes. There were a few good years of 3-centnicks, and lots of rotated die examples among them. Good luck with finding exciting strikes among Barber coins.
Kind of a cheat sheet method to start narrowing it down would be to look for where high grades are cheaper and plentiful. That's usually a good place to start for series where you have no idea on which ones were well made.
Did clashes shouldn't have any affect on the strike. For the Var 1 Buff-a Denver Mint example is usually nicer than the Phiily Mint coin.
Awesome start guys! Lots of good info here so far! I know the general theme when it comes to learning coins is "look at as many as possible." But if you look at alot of mushy strike coins, you won't know what you're missing. Thank you to all of you series collectors out there helping us out! Sent from my SCH-I545 using Tapatalk
