For those that have plenty of experience opening a TPG slab to get the coin out... what is the best way to do it?

If you can't machine cut it, I would wrap it on a thick cloth and put it on its side and lightly hammer it (But with some force) until it cracks open. Just be aware it is always possible that the coin could get damaged (scratched, dinged, etc) when doing this so be careful and take your time.

Send it back to the TPG tell them you're unhappy with the grade and they'll unslab it. Unsure of cost. :D

  6. From my experience, a good twist and a screwdriver will open any NGC slab. A good twist will open an ICG Slab. I can twist a PCGS slab and make it crack, but I need the effort of pliers of some sort to finish the job.

This is what I did to get a coin out of an ICG slab once, though I would recommend using a large rubber mallet over a metal hammer.

Squeeze it in a vice longways. Works beautiful for all slabs.

I use metal shears just clip a corner and you can usually open it from there

    Addendum

Place the shears on the corner. Look away or shut eyes really tight then crack. Otherwise use goggles.

So many slabs , so little time . 2 pairs of vice grips and twist , but I usually just use a hammer . Never hurt a coin yet .

Just used kitchen shears on one of the upper corners of the slab, no need for heavy equipment...
