I have a 1976 Proof set, thats kinda contaminated.
So I was wondering the best way to crack it, and put them in some 2x2 flips.

These sets are not sealed as tightly as you might think. I have used a knife blade to pry the edges apart. The set almost unsnaps.

    THIS IS IMPORTANT!!!

The knife can and will cut you if you put your fingers in the way. Also the knife can ruin your coins if you allow it to come in contact with them. BE CAREFUL!!!

Sometimes will take a vise, or some sets you can open with your thumb nail. :D Depends on the set and year I guess.

I use a pliers. I break open the edge, and then you can pull it apart.

    Well, that was interesting.
I had a towel on my desk (incase one popped out), plus I had 2 pliers and a flathead screwdriver.
I felt like I was doing an operation. lol.

Anyways, all went well, except the fact that all the paper inside got everywhere! grr.
But the set was already contaminated, so it wasnt too bad.

I plan on buying another set anyways :)

by the way, it was a 1976 Set. Stupidly I didnt have any 2x2 flips for dollars! lol.
so I put the Eisenhower Dollar in the flip thingy that you get when you contact ANACS. they give you 10 flips - big enough for anything.

Be careful....those filps that ANACS sends out are PVC. If you plan on keeping the coin I would suggest buying another holder.

I stand the set on its edge on top of a small anvil (I am sure a cement floor would work just as well) and I tap it all the way around to break the plastic "tougue-and-groove" or whatever you would call the sealing mechanism. Then the two sides just come a part when gently pulled.

there were a few (around 3) noticeable pieces inside the set. not on the coins, although the half dollar does have something on it... which was not my doing

He must be referring to the Bald Eagle 3-coin proof set. The mint price is $369. Ebay has sold two of them for $699 so far.

OK - I'm wondering what that has to do with a 1976 Proof set - which is what this thread is about.
