Hello CoinTalkers! I have a quick question. I know alot about coin grading and numismatics alone, but I figured if I ever need specific info on a certain series and where it may ware off the quickest at the highest points of, I should have a Coin Grading Guide handy. So, to cut to the chase, In your guys' opinion, what is the best US Coin Grading Guide out there on the current market? PLEASE LEAVE COMMENTS BELOW. Thanks Ladies and Gentlemen, Brian
I would honestly focus on whatever series you are interested in and look at example after example. If you want a general, all-around book, then I would recommend the Official Guide to Coin Grading and Counterfeit Detection.
'Making The Grade' (by the publisher of Coin World) has color-coded photos for numerous series of coins that show the places where wear will first show.
I would suggest Photograde by James Ruddy and The PCGS Guide to Grading and Counterfeit Detection both are excellent references on grading. Photograde gives detailed descriptions as well as pictures on grades up to Mint State. the PCGS Guide gives detailed info about all grades including MS grades up to and including MS-70. Basically, if a coin is circulated, I use Photograde, if it's uncirculated, then I use the PCGS Guide. I would also recommend this website: http://www.pcgs.com/photograde/ hope that helps
