When going to a weekend coin show, which day do you get the best buys? First one in line on day one, or last person to leave on day three?
Depends on what you are there for. Usually, coin dealers will stock up on cool high end stuff just for the show, so the earlier you get there, the better chance of seeing this stuff before it gets snapped up. On the other hand, near the end of the show, dealers will usually have a bunch of over the table new purchases from collectors, with the common stuff mostly unsearched. You might get to cherry pick some nice coins or varieties from these late purchases. Also, if you want to sell coins, early is good if you think you have some of the cool high end stuff to sell, late is good if you have common things for sale. Dealers will want to stock up on proof and mint sets for the next show, and they will have a few bucks in their pockets from the show, so they might be more likely to buy quantities of common stuff. I collect high end Ike dollars and early Jefferson nickels. Early is the best time for those, as they get picked up pretty quick. I like to spend as much time as I can walking the floor, looking at coins, occasionally buying or selling something, talking to the dealers, drooling....
Ive never shopped a coin show like that, when I go I have a list of the coins I want and a price that I will pay for them,If I pay at or below The VAUE I HAVE determined then I got a deal ,it doesnt matter which day. although I have seen the dealers be more willing to deal in the last few hours of an event !!!!
Well when I like to go is early in the morning right after it opened. Now I've only been to 2 shows but once I went right after it opened--the next year I went a few hours after it opened and I just didn't see the show like it was the year before---It was.."if you look through that box make sure you put everything back in order like I had it" and more as the year before it was "look all you want and make an offer".. So I'd go as early as possible. Speedy
The last coin show I went to I found the best prices on the last day. A couple of the dealers were willing to drop their prices and I got some pretty good deals. Of course waiting till the last day I did not have as much to choose from but to me I got the best deals. coinsngolf
I don't think it really matters. Coin dealers are always on their way to the next show or back to their shop. And a lot of the dealers at shows are vest pocket dealers - that means they either don't sell coins full time or they don't even have a shop. They just visit the shows they like and when/if they like. But in almost every case - if something doesn't sell - they just wait til the next time.
I was in Bay City today and the mall there had a Card, Coin, & Collectable show. I thought I was in luck and stumbled upon a coin show. Well I walked into the mall and there wasn't much there and NO COINS as advertised on the mall marquee. The show is from Jan. 7-9th. What a joke it was, wasn't worth my time. All they had were sportscards, comics, and beanie babies. Ugh! David
David, That is typical for shows at malls. Who hangs out at malls, kids, what do kids buy, sportscards, comics and beanie babies.
Yeah, thats true. I have seen coins there before at other shows that were in that mall but that was some time ago. David
Wow Speedy- you've never heard of Jim Carrey? You do look like a younger version of him- never thought about it until now! Anyways, to answer the topic question- my best time to buy is whenever I have the money! For a town the size of mine, we don't have very many coin shows, so I gotta take what I can get! Rachel
