What is the best place to find current value for coins? I have a 1939 Mercury dime, slabbed and graded at MS-64, 100% white. It seems that there are so many different places to look, I don't know what is the best. I guess, if I sold, I'd rather sell to collector than dealer as I believe collector would pay more. Is that accurate?
    thanks.

As to who would pay more - it all depends. If you could find a collector who really wanted the coin - yes he would likely pay more than a dealer. To find out how much - try looking at realized auction prices on ebay.

If you mean for selling - again ebay. But if you are not a regular with good feedback - that's not true. If you truly wish to sell the coin I think I would consign it to another ebay seller.

A lot is going to depend on who graded it. If it's graded by NGC or PCGS, it's value on eBay would be around $25 high end and may only sell for $10. If it has a FB designation, you'd have a better chance of realizing the $25 price. Without that designation, you won't see a very high premium on eBay. Hope this helps.

What would consigning to a seller mean. Never heard of that before. Let's assume eBay did not exist, there must be a more specific place to find potential buyers, isn't there? I guess eBay may scare me a little bit as it seems like such a too general of a place to sell coins. You've got people buying/selling French Toast. probably a little Naievity (sp?) on my part, but I guess eBay was the last place I thought numismatics would sell coins (not that I'm a numismatic< i just have a lot of stuff I've saved/received over the years..

Sorry, I'm a little new, what's 'FB' mean?

Sorry, I should have explained. FB=Full Bands. Most of the Winged Liberty dimes do not have an extremely sharp strike on the bands on fasces on the reverse. As a result, the bands blend to together in areas rather than showing as separate all the way across.

Consigning would be having someone else sell it for you. The seller usually charges a percentage of the sale price and sends a check or money order to you for your portion of the sale.

Ebay actually has a very large coin market. There are some very fair, honest sellers and also quite a few scam artists. Ebay is not a place for a new collector/buyer of coins. It is possible to protect yourself and there are deals to be had but the operative word is "Caution".

    Ok Thanks.
The dime is FB at least from what I can tell. the bands are quite distinctive.

If it is graded by NGC or PCGS, it will say FB or FSB on the holder with the grade. The upper and lower bands would distinctly show 3 bands and the center band would show 2 distinct bands all the way across the fasces.

    skane -

eBay is probably the single largest coin market there is in the world today. On any given day you can find literally hundreds of thousands of coins for sale.

Oh.....see how ignorant I am. I don't believe it says that. However, I'm not sure if it was graded by NGC or PCGS. I'll have to check. Can you tell me what it means when it says 'White'. That is on the slab.

"White" indicates no toning whatsoever - a nice bright, frosty surface

I think you'll find it was slabbed by NGC.

The slab says PCS. Is that now 'PCGS'?

No. PCGS is Professional Coin Grading Service. I don't know what PCS is and couldn't find anything on them on the internet. Perhaps someone else here has heard of them. Unfortunately, in my opinion, you would be better off if it was slabbed/graded by PCGS, NGC, ICG, or ANACS. These are the companies that are known for consistency and quality. Do you have any way to post pictures?

I tried taking a picture last night with my digital camera (actually my wife tried), but all that shosed up in the finder was a bright disk. I am no phot bug by any stretch, so we gave up. Is there a way I can scan it using my scanner and post the image? Does scanning work?

A scan is fine. We would love to see it.

Sorry to be dense and I appreciate your patience....So I can scan an image on my printer/scanner and turn it into a file? I didn't even think about that. I'll have to give it a try....duh...It will be saved as a .jpg?
