I have a 1978 trade dollar that I want to keep in the best condition possible. Besides getting it graded what is the best case of capsule thing to store it in - thanks.
I am sure you mean 1878 not 1978. :smile I would put it in an airtite holder or get it slabbed by either PCGS or NGC. Welcome to CT. TC
Hello moot1, First, welcome to the CoinTalk forum. :smile :welcome: The advice from Topcatcoin is good but perhaps you could post a photo of the coin here so everyone can provide advice. Where did you get the coin? I don't know if you are aware that many fakes exist for the US trade dollar series. There are also many nice examples that are worthy of slabbing. Please post a photo.
are these slabs good so i dont have to buy a pcgs membership? http://www.air-tites.com/Coin_World_Coin_Slabs.htm#.UTI3VjDii84
Nice coin, Moot1! Yes, the airtites are great, especially if you don't want to spend the extra money to get the coin graded. Although having it graded has it's own benefits, when it comes to preserving the coins condition (and value) the airtites are a good option.
okay thank you. do you have any idea what the coin is worth i dont cause i dont know how to grade them really
http://coinauctionshelp.com/tradedollar.html http://coinauctionshelp.com/tradedollar.html I cannot see the coin in your photo well enough to provide my grade opinion. This link may help you grade the coin. Please do not attempt to clean the coin in any manner. The reason it has value to us coin collectors is because it looks old and original. If you clean this kind of original coin, it will become worth MUCH LESS to the people that might want to buy it.
BTW, the trade dollar is a coin that is widely counterfeited. The original coins are made of silver & are valued by collectors. The fakes are typically not made of silver and are not nearly as valuable. If you are interested in coin collecting, you may want to get a copy of The Guide to US Coins by Yeoman "Red Book". You may also want to show your coin to a coin dealer & ask him/her for their in-hand opinion of the coin. Here are some market prices for an original trade dollar: F $125 (Fine condition) VF $130 (Very Fine condition) EF $210 (Extra Fine condition) AU $270 (About Uncirculated)
