I just got my coin and chronicles set in the mail today. I only had to wait 4 months for it. The bad thing is that is sealed in cellophane so I can't open it up without hurting the resale value. Anyone else get theirs?
Perhaps it shouldn't - but it does. A great many collectors have little or no interest in such mint products unless it is in original packaging. Just ask yourself, what sells for a higher price - a Proof or Mint set in original packaging or the same Proof or Mint set in a Capital holder ? What sells for a higher price - a raw coin or a slabbed coin ? In both cases, the only difference is the packaging.
Some people opened up Millennium sets and replaced the burnished Sac dollar with a regular unc. dollar that they had toned artificially, and then sold the sets on ebay. That is why I decided to buy a sealed Millennium set. I don't think something like that could happen to the Franklin sets (no "special finish" coin in the set), but some people still prefer sealed sets. I guess it makes the set feel "newer" or something.
I did not take mine out of the plastic. I would sort of like to but I may sell them and I would like to be able to call them new.
I only got 2 sets. I opened up one, and plan on selling the other unopened one, although I'm not sure where I'll be selling it.
When inquiring in the past about the appeal of the unopened vs opened sets, I was informed by a long time dealer that many people prefer the unopened in the hopes of finding a rarity or error in the closed package. The thought being that it would be less likely to have been cherry picked or tampered with and that the pleasure of discovery would be theirs. Willcoins
